Last Remnant is not your usual FF styled RPG. It's a bit different than your usual turn based RPGs, instead of issuing commands to your characters, you give general guidelines to units of characters, and they decide what abilities best to use based on the guidelines you set. No real levels exist, instead as you use certain skills, the characters get better at those skills and grow in that field.

This battle system can be annoying at times, but you do get used to it, and it is a fun game overall.

it works rather like the battling in ff 12 I thought.

I still need to take out the Absolute Conqueror in that game...

And honestly, I can't really agree with it being similar to FFXII since I actually liked The Last Remnant. The battle system is a pain in the ass to get the hang of, but when you finally do and you get some guys with a good setup going, it's pretty fun.

Not quite. In 12 you had control of your characters actions, and pretty much direct control of your partner's actions through the use of the gambit system (just a bunch of If/Then conditions, etc.)

In Last Remnant, you set up your characters into units. You get more units/characters allowed in battle as you progress in the story.

Each unit has a shared HP total. Once the unit's HP reaches zero, you can no longer issue commands to that unit. You give general commands to the unit like, Stay Back, Wait, Attack using magic, Attack all out, Physical Attack, etc. These commands have different names, not as specific as that, but that's basically what they do.

Depending on what the units can/cannot do, they choose their own attacks based on the general command you give to the unit. Sometimes it can be difficult to get a group to use the abilities you want it to. This is especially true on some fights when a unit goes down and you are trying to revive them, the unit with your alchemist or restorative magic user may not always get the command to use their revive abilities right away.

One of the main things people hated about the game was the lack of ability to directly control characters.

I do confess to that being annoying but I was more pissed off with how the battle rankings thing worked when I finally realized.

I do respect how they tried to do a similar system to Saga Frontier and such in that regard, but they really should've went into more detail on how that worked so people wouldn't end up being ridiculously underpowered later on.

Just about anything from Valve: TF2, Portal, Left for Dead 1/2, Counter Strike Source, etc. All great/good games.
