^ I have been pondering about this for a few days so...yeah. Literature, such as novels, movies, TV series, or anything that gives a plot, is considered a form of art. Now, video games sometimes give us a quite satisfactory story (depending on opinion). Some video games are also made for the sake of giving a calming effect (Zen Bound) or producing impressive visuals (such as the PS3 Game, Flower) So can video games be considered as a form of art?
The question is, when the aren't art... what are they then? Art is opinion so mine is that games are art. There are exhibits which move like a movie. And there are times you can interact. Well games are those too into one
i dont see how a painting about paint splatter that could be done by a 5 years old is an art, and yet i see it countless time in art gallery... art is subjective... and i do see video game as a form of art, as much as theater, cinematic movie and music is an art...
Why should we care if it's ever considered art? I for one don't, even though I'd argue that they are. Is it to validate our hobby? Why do we need to validate something that's creeping up to the masses? I don't know but if a woman eating dirt is considered art; people giving microphones blow jobs is art; playing static on a keyboard is considered art; or interpretive dance; is considered art, then fucking everything is art. And yes, I've seen these ALL, messed up shit.
Now, that you mention it, yes. For me, especially Zen Bound 2, Bastion, Braid, and many others like those.
Sandbox games like SIMCity 4 IS used by a lot of players as the art supplies for making gorgeous works of art, as examples: CJ (City Journal) Photos by Paeng of SimPeg Productions.
I think so. All those developers that intend to put the player through an experience certainly help the video games as art case. And even for less "artistic" games, there is music/artwork.
