It depends. If you don't want to spend a lot of money I'd recommend a R4 DS. I have one myself and about 95% of the things I downloaded work on it. But 100% of the games I got worked without a problem. Some homebrew applications wont work on it but the real good apps worked great. I only had about 4 failures of about 50 downloads so that is a very good flash cart. But I also heard about the R4 is that the compatibility is to due with the speed of the micro SD card. So if you want a lot of compatibility go for the best. Kingston 1GB micro SD cards are recommended.
