Should criticizing religion really be looked down upon?

People get mad all the time saying 'you cant say those things, you cant say that my god doesnt exist, im offended'

The only way to debate is to question arguments.

You go on 'offense' and offer evidence to support your claims. You cannot DEBATE religion without being offensive so why is that people think that doing so is shameful offense, yet alone something that shouldnt be done.

You CAN debate without being offensive. I don't see why people choose to bash religion in religion debates, it's pointless and stupid.

yes, but as our religious debates here prove, some people can't. they see the questioning that is an inherent part of debating as an attack on their religion.

Points are points, yes. You can state something without being offensive, and it can be a perfectly okay argument. Gotta be careful what you say though, of course, because some people might take things the wrong way, and it just turns into a flaming war. XD But there will be people that bash others because of where they stand on religion, which can turn into a flaming war as well.

    Inquiry, or offensively enforced stereotype?

The bible was written by man, and not god. This is a valid argument yet some people would say that im wrong and attacking religion.

The easiest way to start looking at these kinds of things as to class atheism as a religion, that way you can fairly safely start grouping people together as opposed to "religious people and athiests".

Ok The above sentence sounds really stupid when read but I can't really grasp the wording I'm after here.
    Use your imaginations.

Krusha I see what you are getting at.. but that is kind of wrong.

Someone can become an atheist without joining a church or organization. Atheism is NOT a religion.

    Religion is defined as...
'..an organized approach to human spirituality which usually encompasses a set of narratives, symbols, beliefs and practices, often with a supernatural or transcendent quality, that give meaning to the practitioner's experiences of life through reference to a higher power or truth.'

Atheism is the opposite to that belief.

I saw, the few religions open for an onslaught from the pure hate machine that is the internet are:

    Scientology.
    Mormonism.

Two stupidest religions on the planet, if anyone has anymore, please mention them.

I think if a religion can't withstand some critique it's not really persuasive to belief in it.

Yes I realise this, I'm trying to say that...
never mind, I really can't scrounge up the right wording for this

Criticising religion should be encouraged, especially if you are a member of a religion. There is nothing wrong with honesty and emancipation.

Just because one group of people get offended for opinions against their version of religion does not mean the opposing opinions against that religion are invalid.

For example, I'm not a religious person in any way, shape or form, but I don't go around putting down people who are extremely religious, regardless of what I may actually think of such people. But on the other hand, I don't want religious people pushing their beliefs on me either.

This is where the offense starts, I may "offend" them if they keep pestering me. But I am offended by their insistence that they are right and I am wrong. Oh! But they don't feel that THEY are offending ME by pushing their beliefs on me. They continue to blabber on about stuff that I "believe" is nothing but fairy tales and fantasy. I, on the other hand, will just feel sorry for them for believing in something I feel is a load a crap, but I won't shove it in their face with some holier than thou (excuse the pun) attitude. I just try to get away from them as quickly as possible.

So, it's OK for me to be offended by them, but it's not OK for them to be offended by me? I don't think so!

I imagine by now you can guess what my thoughts on religion are....are you offended?

Maybe I'm wrong and religion is right. Maybe I'm right and religion is bullocks. I don't know. I guess we'll all find out when we die. But let me ask you this; which religion is right, if any of them are? There are so many to choose from. Am I supposed to just pick the one that suits me best? That doesn't seem right either.

There can only be ONE correct religion, if any of them are. Which one is that? Can you provide actual tangible irrefutable PROOF that it is correct? No, you can't. Just as I can't 100% disprove any religion. What I choose to believe or not to believe should be MY choice and I should not be criticized for it, nor should they.

As for offense....well that depends on how far one's opinion wants to persist against the other, now doesn't it?

Sorry if any of my comments offends anyone. ;)

    hypr's post quote

i believe you are misinformed about what loony may have meant. i believe loony doesn't mean a debate amongst two religious groups but within a particular group. the one thing i've seen is that martin luther was great for reforming the catholic church which eventually changed things for everyone in europe and the world. but i haven't see the same result yet for islamics.

the debate between christians and islamics are really about popularity and superiority, it's like the cold war of religion.

critiquing religion shouldn't be looked down on as it's a question against authority. if you look at europe during the 16th-18th century [early modern time in europe], you'll see a lot of questioning of authority. it's a good thing as it's to help reform the political/social system to accommodate the needs of society.

remember the inquisitions? would you like the church to bring them back?

criticizing religion will only breed hatred and tension. theres no point to voice your opinions so passionately because religion will always exist with us even if we hate it i personally hate the jehova witnesses knockin at my door every monday or tuesday morning trying to convert me or something and all these stupid bible bashers (no offense intended). so i think its better to keep your opinions to yourself. religions a sensitive topic.
