shin megami tensei strange journey Startup freeze Desmume

I've been trying to get SMT:SJ working on desmume since it showed up on the site, however, despite various attempts from patches and just fiddeling with the graphics options in desmume, i keep gettign a black screen shortly after i select new game, until then it works fine, it loads the title screen, i can go into an mess with the options (it even saves what i change there) but once i select new game, it goes a screen with text (from what i can tell it's the little 'this game is a work of fiction etc..' bit) then goes to a black screen and doesn't do anything. i've also tried with iDeaS and gotten the same effect, so any advice?
