I can't see how installing Avast got anything to do with your Desktop.

Try going to control panel --> system & security --> find & fix problem.
Maybe it will help identify what the problem is. Could be a missing file, removed due to a fake positive causing that certain file be quarantine/deleted by Avast. But its hard to be sure unless you can get a more comprehensive report from your system regarding what is wrong.

Do start making back up of your important files in a portable device; documents, pictures, etc. while you still can. Should the issue worsen, you won't lose them. If you're not sure about what you should be doing, best is take it to a sevice centre, they could identify and fix it in a matter of hour.

I see, then as JBH said, you need to format the C:\, insert your CD Driver Back up disk, run it, and you'll have a stock/default windows/factory default, and will have to reinstall all your softwares, program updates, etc. including microsoft office.

But I suggest you first take out the harddrive, put it into an external drive casing, open it in another computer to back up important files first. If you're not sure about doing all these, take it to a service centre. On a side note, if there are files (e.g. My Documents) that you password protect, it can't be salvaged. All files in the D:\ will be safe as long as you just format the C:\.

Lucky you.... otherwise you'll have to go through all the trouble of the aftermath from formatting the c:\. Especially the tons of windows updates to re-download, not to mention programs/softwares to re-install.

I suggest moving the most important files/documents to D:\ for safekeeping, or back up in an external device.

Wait.... let me get this straight.... You only installed an AV (Anti-virus software) AFTER you've been infected by a virus!?

Not a smart move kiddo *facepalm*

An advice I could give you is to seek assistance for these kinds of major computer problems in places like:

    http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/

As folks on there are experts when it comes to dealing with nasty viruses & malware removal. And by the sound of it you caught one very nasty mother if it disabled several functionalities of your computer.

I also could've suggested you to download combofix from bleepingcomputer as well, but that app.'s so powerful that it's a bit dangerous to use if you do not know what you're doing. In the worst case scenario, you could render your computer un-usable if something goes wrong. But, with the assistance of people on bleepingcomputer you can use it successfully.

Here's a demo of combofix in action:

That alone should give you enough reason to be suspicious.

For anybody that doesn't know, he downloaded a questionable torrent without an anti-virus and is now suffering the consequences.
