I want to ask anybody, specially those using a linksys broadband router, how to set a password. Well, i we need to to keep our precious internet to our house. There has been some free loaders, namely our neighbor who is using our wifi for their computers which sucks for us because it slows our connection speed. Ok, here's what i want to know basically: -How can i make that you need to type your password first before you can get access to the wifi connection?
That would be in the settings of the router. Seems to simple doesn't it? Well, for netgear (and simerlar routers-same process) you type in the "defualt" ip adress in your internet adress bar using your Internet browser. Next, just do your name and password on the screen that may pop up. 192.168.1.1 ^^^default ip adress, the google link even said it was for your router even though it works on mine XD Just find the option to change the SSID, password, etc (I'd suggest WPA, and make it something with letter's and numbers for good secruity)
ok, there are different types of your suggested WPA. Personal and enterprise...there is also a WPA2 personal and enterprise..what should i pick? and after i pick for example the WPA personal, it has a drop down button WPA algorithms... it let me choose TKIP or AES, what should i pick and the shared key is the password that will be used by my family only, right?
Ok, done it. Thanks for all your help! I just need to put a password for our router cause our neighbor is slowing our connection. I already had the hunch that they are getting our signal but has no proof, but my brother found it out, cause he turned off the router once, and the neighbor kinda got mad, and stand up from his computer chair.. i thought it was a coincidence, but when my brother turned it on and off for 2 more times, its gets funny cause they are reacting to what my brother was doing... so well... it couldn't be coincidence anymore. Thanks mds and loony...
you can also use mac filtering to stop them connecting, but its easy to bypass if they know what they're doing. Also turn off SSID broadcast (hides the network), change the SSID and reduce the transmit power if you can.
depends if its easy to guess or not. If it follows the rules for strong passwords (at least 8 characters, mixture of upper and lower case letters and digits), then they shouldnt be able to. WPA2 isn't crackable at this point.
Google search for password generator yields the awesome http://www.pctools.com/guides/password/ It even gives you a verbal way to spell out the password for passing it on over the phone. I hope you have good communication in your house, or at least a good place to hide the password in the open.
Unless you have a group "simple" cipher. An example could be as simple as reversing the letters. Anything that you're fairly sure will work on this imposing neighbor.
