If I have 2 hard drives, can I put an OS onto the second drive without partitioning the other drive?

yes but you will still need a bootloader to choose which OS you run.

The two OS's are XP home and either OpenSUSE, or Ubuntu

then you use grub or lilo, both of which are installed with linux. (openSUSE is the better distro of the two, btw).

By the way Loony, why don't you like Ubuntu?

because it attempts to make linux easy for the layman and makes a complete hash of it.

I like openSUSE because it has a chameleon instead of Tux the Penguin

it still has tux, tux is the global linux mascot. Individual distros have their own mascots.
