Everytime I either restart or reboot I get this ugly thing in my face:

Could somebody please tell me why and if there's a fix for it other than wiping my hard drive and reinstalling XP?

that sounds like an add-on for internet explorer or firefox, so you might want to check to see what you have installed there ^__^

Clearing up your IE cache, cookies, temporary files, etc. would be one way to try first. If that still does not work, try doing a system check. If that also does not solve it, try reinstalling IE.

I clicked that link and this is the first thin I read: "System Tip
This article applies to a different version of Windows than the one you are using. Content in this article may not be relevant to you." So I don't think this is going to help.

Have you tried deleting your temporary internet files? The script error should have been caused by something in it. Such as you visited a site that is unsafe or has compatibility issues with the browser you use, may be you had visited a site that was build using uncommon program that is not compatible with Microsoft or a site build using an old program that is no longer supported.

    To solve it,

Its best you delete the cache such as cookies, temporary files, and history from your browser.

Go to : tools --> internet options --> browsing history --> tick all except Password --> delete.

Then go back to internet options --> advance --> tick the "Disable script debugging" and untick the "display a notification about every script error".

And if you had accidentally installed "FAST Browser Search", remove it. To do so go to:
Tools --> Manage Add on --> look for Fast Browser Search --> delete

    Try it.

Look at this too, its a blog made by one of the Microsoft staff : http://blogs.msdn.com/b/ie/archive/2009/04/08/handling-script-errors-from-three-different-perspectives.aspx

it could be malware. That error is definitely IE related, do a full malware scan.

I get a similar script error using firefox. It's very rare (appears maybe once every two weeks) and only appears on very precise locations. Is that Malware or simply an error?

that would be an error. its the fact that it appears on startup every time that suggests malware.

And also the type of error...it's a banner error...so it does sound like malware...

Ryan, what you see is what you get. That's why I took a screenshot of it. Sio I wouldn't get questions like yours.

Most of the time, yes. I once also had this on this laptop, after installing Microsoft Security Essentials it reported malware (ClickPotato). I removed it and gone.

    lol good one
