my laptop screen has been going blank at random times for no apparent reason. It's not in sleep mode and the screen didn't shut off. I'm not sure if the computer is still responsive but i tried starting windows shutdown with the power button but it didn't work so the only way to fix it is by forcing the power off. I've also been getting this system warning in the event viewer a lot.

    Code:
A corrected hardware error has occurred.

    Component: AMD Northbridge
    Error Source: Corrected Machine Check
    Error Type: 14
    Processor ID: 0

The details view of this entry contains further information.

im not sure if its connected to the screen problem or not. i googled it and other forums said it my be something with the motherboard or the power supply but i don't have the same problems as the other people had.

    specs
    gateway m2626u
cpu: amd turion x2 2.1Ghz dual core
    ati: radeon 3200 hd
    OS: windows 7 ultimate

EDIT: okay it seams my whole system freezes when the screen goes black. also i noticed that that the screen sometimes flickers once now. (well not the monitor just everything on the screen. the backlight stays the same.)

UPDATE: still happening today and i noticed the fallowing. my computer is unresponsive yet my media servers still stream media, and i did some experimenting and left my computer on the bios setup screen for a while and it didn't go into a black screen so im going to try linux to see if it does the same. and finally my computer isn't recognizing my external hard drive now. it keeps saying unsupported device and it can't find drivers.

UPDATE X2 (i know lot of updates): i don't get the error once in safe mode. so could it be the drivers?

Not 100% sure what to do here, but i suggest at least making sure the cpu is plugged in (perhaps one of the pins of the connector isn't in all the way), the drivers are up to date, and that the cpu isn't overheating. If that doesn't fix it, contact amd and complain till they walk you through it, or they offer to replace the cpu (or give you an upgrade).

its a laptop so the cpu is soldered in or something. and my warranty ran out last December so i can't even call gateway support. i doubt amd would help me. and i just cleaned my fan out so it can't be overheating.

also my computer is unresponsive yet my media servers still stream media, and i did some experimenting and left my computer on the bios setup screen for a while and it didn't go into a black screen so im going to try linux to see if it does the same. and finally my computer isn't recognizing my external hard drive now. it keeps saying unsupported device and it can't find drivers.

...and in safe mode i don't get the error ?????

Hmm... well my next move would be to back up my stuff and system restore and hope its just a error within windows

yes it can, gateways have appalling thermal design.

but my computer doesn't power off and the temps, atleast the temps i can see in speedfan, aren't high enough to cause it to cut off.

funny thing about that, all of my restore points have disappeared. so eventually i'm going to try a clean install. another funny thing is that linux doesn't cut off at all it runs normally, but i haven't been able to install the ati driver ether. and windows safe mode runs normally and error free too. my external HDD is working now so at least there's some good news..
