A friend of mine has Black ops with a small scratch on it, becuase of that the PS3 does not read the disk
It depends on the location and how deep the scratch is. Scratches more towards the center will be more detrimental, and scratches on the top of the disc can be just as bad as scratches on the bottom. Any deep scratch will probably render your game unplayable to some extent. It could start up, but freeze up when trying to access certain parts of the menu, etc. There is no really defined way to tell how many scratches are too many. You could have six dozen light play scratches and have no effect on the disc. The only way to know is if the game doesn't play anymore via actually trying to play it.
Oh, crap...I guess I'd have to buy a new disk then...my dad tried playing the game this morning and it wouldn't start (he could still play it last night before we had a power outage)...>.> Thanks for the answers, though, guys!
That might not be a disc problem. You might have a corrupt file database. It happens sometimes when you turn off the PS3 incorrectly (like during a power outage, or it freezes, or you turn off the console from the back). It will happen more often if the PS3 is reading or writing to the disc. Pop your PS3 into service mode and run option 3 and 4 to be thorough. (Google this if you don't know what I'm talking about). I've had to run service mode repeatedly because of a few problem games...cough TEST DRIVE UNLIMITED 2!
What will happen with the save file? 'Cuz I'm pretty sure my dad won't be too happy when his save file ends up being erased. BTW, do I still have to do that service-mode thing even if it's just for that particular game? (All the other games we have run except for that one).
Always back up your saves. Dynasty Warriors 7 and Test Drive Unlimited 2 deleted my saves when the game froze because it was in the middle of autosaving. Option 3 and 4 shouldn't screw with your saves, but it will mark saves corrupted if they were corrupted before executing Options 3 and 4. And yes, you'll have to pop it in service mode for options 3 and 4 for that particular game. What game is it? It might be something to do with the game. TDU2 was patched so it wouldn't freeze.
Infamous. We got it from a local video game shop since I couldn't download it from the Welcome Back package.
I've never heard of Infamous causing these issues. It may just be because of that one time the power went out. If it happened to be saving at that particular moment, you might have corrupt save files, or the install might be corrupted (do we even have install data for Infamous?). Whatever it happened to be using at the time. If you've already done options 3 and 4, and this keeps re-occurring, then I'm pretty much all out of suggestions. Other than reinstalling the install data, repatching up to current, and then executing options 3 and 4 (to basically double-check), then I really don't have anything else. Executing options 3 and 4 will not change your save data in any way. I've had to run it several times because of previously said problematic games. However, running option 5 and greater may wipe the data...I can't remember what exactly those options were, but I'm not gonna reboot and be a button push away from ruining my CFW setup/wiping my 425 GB worth of games just to find out.
Well, when I boot the disk up on my account, it still doesn't play...so, I'm not sure if that's my dad's save causing the problems (are the saves connected on different accounts?). *moving a bit away from the topic* ...wait, you can move from a CFW to the Official Firmware doing that? My PS3's on the Official Firmware but a friend of mine is nagging me to have it jailbroken. I told him I would rather not lose the PSN capability...
You can move from firmware of the same version or greater using the recovery menu. You can go from 3.55 OFW to 3.55 CFW that way, but it has to be 3.55. The system won't let you restore firmware if you're restoring downward. But if there were a 3.60 CFW, then using recovery menu would work since it is considered upgrading, not downgrading. As far as your problem, it shouldn't be the savefile that is the issue. It may be the installed data in the Game Data directory. Delete that and reinstall the game to see if that's the issue. If it runs, great. Patch it up to latest and start playing. If not, then we can rule out the Game Data. And if worst comes to worst, you can always go to a game rental place, rent Infamous, and switch the discs.
There's a better solution. I once ordered a used game online and when I got it it looked somebody tried to clean it with a hunk of steel wool! I took it to our town's Family Video and they've got to wonderful machines! ;v) One sands off the thinest of layers from the disc and the other one polishes it! ;v) It doesn't take very long for them to do it and it's only 2 bucks a disc too! ;v) And when they got it done I looked at it and said this is the same disc?! I also asked why they don't make those machines for home use and they said it was the old cost effective thing which makes perfect sense.
