I'm having a hard time saving in The Castle of Dr. Brain. Every time I make what I think will be an OK save game folder the game says it's not! UGH! Could somebody please tell me something that'll make the game happy? I am using DosBox.

I gave this game a shot, and I think I've identified the problem as to why the game won't allow you to save or delete games unless you change something.

Go to your Windows Explorer and right-click the Dr. Brain game folder and click on Properties. On the bottom of the window, un-check the Read-only option, and click Yes to apply to the subdirectories as well.

Now, go run Dr. Brain game under Dosbox, and you should be able to save your game progress.

    Does that fix it?

It's odd, because in Windows, the read only flag for folders is not used for read only. It's just a lazy programmer at Microsoft that used it for a flag to say "This folder contains user modified settings" instead of creating a new registry flag for it.

Maybe since it's an old DOS game, the use of that read only flag is screwing around with the games settings?

It could be that Fennyariel may have possibly downloaded the game, and once she extracted the archive, the folder was set to "Read-Only" by default. That seems to be the case whenever I get a folder packed in an archive and then extract it with WinRAR.

Most folders are set to Read-Only on Windows systems. This doesn't mean they are read only. Windows can still write files to the directory.

Maybe it causes confusion with older programs.

Thanx guys but it didn't work. It keeps coming up with an invalid directory error. And I'm trying to put it into C:! How can that be invalid?!

Fennyariel, can you please post the screenshot of the problem? I would like to take a look at this when I get home from work.

Well I'd love to put up a screenshot except for one thing. I don't know how. Could somebody tell me please?

Press the Print Screen button and it will copy what you are currently seeing onto the clipboard. Then open a image editing software like MSPaint, and choose Edit - Paste. This will paste the image in your clipboard from the print screen command.

press the prt scr key (or alt+prt scr to get just the active window), open microsoft paint, go to edit->paste, then save and upload as normal.

Make sure that DosBox window of the game is active. Then press Alt and Print Screen buttons on your keyboard.

Next, open up any graphics-editting program such as Paint or Photoshop. In any of those programs, click Edit on the menu and select Paste. The screenshot you took should be pasted.

Save it as JPG and then upload it on Photobucket / Imageshack / whatever, and then post the image here using the following:

    Code:

I've tried both those sites and they don't work for me. Oh well, thanx anyway.

Ok, I've dug more further regarding your error. Let's give it one more shot...

Apparently, I was able to get a similar error message that you got by clicking on "Change Directory" when you are trying to save the game. If you are trying to change the directory, I'd advise you not to do that. Just save the game as normal to that specified directory that game has assigned for you.

    Hopefully this helps...

Well that's why I tried changing directories. If I try saving in the game's folder it complains that it's full!

Delete some saved game files that you don't need. Or even better, just replace them.

If you still need those saved game files, just make a copy of those saved games into another folder in Windows Explorer.

When you just click save it opens the folder I've got all the game's files in. That's why in the beginning I was wanting to change directories.

Can you list the files that come up when you try to save your game? I want to make sure if it is the actual game files that are needed for Dr Brain to run.

Well for one that's what I meant in the first place. It's showing me the list of the game folder where all the game files are. And for two, I'm not a computer illiterate, I come from the old DOS days when we had to do all the really cool things that Windows does for us now the HARD way! By hand! ;v)

And as far as listing all those files I just have one simple little question. Are you nuts?! There's 65 files in there! I'd be here for 3 forevers and a day typing all that mess! Sheesh! ;v)

So what happens if you try to save the game in the default directory, rather than changing it?
