How many times have you gotten so far into the game, needed to go do something, and realize that you were nowhere NEAR a save point? Or you've just fought a boss, died, and have to repeat it again because there wasn't a save place after it. Seriously, though, it's pretty annoying and has happened to me so often on RPGs and platformers alike. Then I play games like Pokemon and wonder why every game won't let you save anywhere you want. And now, with the next-gen systems it's possible to automatically save anywhere so you can just continue where you left off. What do you guys think of save points in general? How should save points be implemented in the future? Does autosave/ save anywhere "babysit" gamers?

i dont like the autosave feature in some games (because if you die, you lose your items and have to get them again) , i prefer the save anywhere you want. because sometimes you have other things to do like chores or work and need to take a break from the game a bit.

Being able to save anywhere can save a lot of frustration of replaying, but I still prefer just having save points scattered about in RPGs; they're a good indicator of something is about to happen. Although some will still prefer games that stick to the old school method of only being able to save in towns (like Dragon Quest) saying that it's for the hardcore gamers.

Autosave is like a service to people, so they don't have to worry about saving their game.

The ability to save anywhere is an alternative, which is good when you have to be somewhere very soon.
(be able to pause anywhere helps a lot, too)

Well, savepoints ... I thought about advantages, but there are only disadvantages coming in my mind.
Yes I know, they are like a mark, but that's it basically.
I know very well how it feels to be beaten my a boss without having saved since 7 hours. :'(

just follow one rule: save early, save often !!

I use the autosave function in every game, except RPGs. You can really screw the game up if autosave is on.

But for FPSs, racing, and everything else (or almost), autosave is on.

I didn't feel any difficulty in Dragon Quest 8 with that feature.

Me neither, it was just really annoying if you died in a boss fight at the end of a level. I was just repeating what some 'hardcore' gamers that I've talked to have said, the whole concept of a hardcore gamer is a bit dumb to me.

I don't really like autosaving or save anywhere you want games, best to keep them at parts to make the game harder, and not so easy. Such as in Final Fantasy etc., being able to save anywhere would just kill it. I'm so good at games like those, I don't need to save much as I never die, muahaha. It would be good if they had save points in Pokemon or something.

mm I think for RPGs especially specific save points (such as inns or devices) can create a world that is more real than if the game features save anytime you want. Yes it is a pain to go back track the whole area just because you died at a boss but that is also part of the gaming experience. I especially like it if the save point before a boss is far away because it rises the tension to make sure I take down the boss unless I want to repeat the process. It's kinda thrilling haha

I hate quick save feature in otome games (love simulation for girls such as VitaminX) becuase it makes me so lazy and I usually skip text and quick save. I find it just make me have more of a reason to not play the game seriously. But for pokemon, I like the save anywhere you want feature...only for pokemon though, don't know why, I'll think about it.

I like the idea of scattered save points like in Final Fantasy, but sometimes they put one right next to another one that is literally 20 feet away. (Guadosalam entrance --> Guadosalam Inn)

Other times, they don't put enough.

I like the idea of saving anywhere like in Pokemon but anyone who has played them know not to save anywhere in between fights in the Elite Four when its your first time through it. Just don't save in a spot where you are guaranteed certain death and I mean that in general for any game.

    I CAN'T STAND autosave!
Either it saves it when you don't want it to, (especially when you die) or you expect it to save and it doesn't.
GTAIV is the prime example of both.
After missions are completed it says autosave, but when I load it up again, oh what the hell? I have to do this mission again?

In general, just to make it easy, save it yourself. Don't depend on autosave. That way you have reassurance that YOU saved it and when you go to load it up, you should be at the EXACT same point that you left off at.

Who needs autosave when you have quick save? :D

    quicksave?
    like Drone Tactics quicksave?
    cuz it doesn't work.

"it allows you to save your progress, and when you start the game again, you will be able to resume where you left off."

BS! I did that right before the end of the map because my battery was dying.
I had to redo the entire level.

who needs quicksave when you have SAVESTATES!
I know I do for the DS anyway...

quick save and savestates are the same :p

suspend is the one in drone tactics and a lot of DS games

Quicksave on some games is when you can save if you need to do something or quit and end the game. When you start it again, you can load from when you quicksaved, but once loaded, it is deleted.

Obviously the requirement for my statement to be true was that the quick save function works... You really cannot judge a feature based on one game's implementation of it. That's awfully close to geeky racism. :p

And I mostly play PC games anyway so I wouldn't know if the DS has a lot of games that use it, but I love how it works in Mass Effect, they limit your saving to only outside of battles, means no cheating. :D

There are a plenty of ways (actually infinitely ways) to implement quicksaves.

    One is like you said.

Another way is to use only one state which is permanently overwritten and
use save states which are serially numbered.

A third way is to save the state only as long as the game is running and delete (or just quit to memorise) it afterwards.

I hate those games when you save is forces you to go to the main screen and when you load the game you have to start from the beginning. Save states are really helpful in platformers because if you miss a tricky jump you can just load the save state and try again until you get it. I usually like the games where the saves are pre-designed so you can only save at that specific spot so you can save before a tough battle or if you feel like it's too tough just go on ahead and if you mess up you can retry without losing items , etc.

I prefer auto-save as it saves me from having to go to a save menu :-X

It usually depends on the games. Being able to save everywhere can be good in one game, but not quite in another. I like my save points placed sparingly in some RPGs, depending on the difficulty, except for Dragon Quest. The whole saving only in towns bit in DQ didn't bother me as much as I thought.

Saving anywhere you want? Depends, like Pokemon or the Digimon DS games and even the Golden Sun game. It'd be annoying to redo a Golden Sun dungeon just because you got a Game Over before reaching a save point.

As for quicksaves...well.*look at FFIII DS*
