Ok so hopefully i get my ipod 5thgen tomorrow and i was wondering if anyone can post a simple guide to installing Rockbox. and the gameboy plugin.
rockbox has a downloadable installer which should set it all up for you. In any case manual install differs between target platforms so I wouldnt be able to help as I dont have an ipod.
you can't do it. 5th gen iPods cannot be hacked. Apple encrypted the firmware, and no one's been able to hack it yet.
yeah, this one which isn't being sold anymore. ChevyNovaSS didn't give us a type of iPod. However, judging from the currently lineup, it has to be a 5th gen iPod Nano, which isn't supported. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/IPod#Models
I read into it a bit, and there are quite a few issues. I'd suggest holding onto the current Apple firmware until everything is sorted out. http://www.rockbox.org/wiki/IpodStatus#Known_issues_4G_models_and_highe
the only problem i might worry about is "usb disk mode" i have no clue what the is but it sounds bad, but from what i read nothing else sounds crippiling.
USB disk mode means you can use it like a portable harddrive, if it's just for music then you can live without. I kinda like the feature though....
from what I understand, recording is missing some features. (Don't think you'll even use this though) The USB Disk Mode refers to using your computer to charge your iPod, not about accessing it's contents. If you have an iPod dock radio (like me), you can charge your iPod this way, rather than the computer. You CAN NOT use firewire to connect the iPod. (Again doesn't matter much, since USB is the standard) There is no click wheel sound. TV/Video-Out doesn't work. There was also something about the flash memory being overwritten by Rockbox, and it's affects on the iPod. I think it said it might brick it. Definitely look into this before proceeding. All the other things seem pretty insignificant.
No, it refers to accessing the contents of the disk. the hint is in the name. what you are talking about is USB charging, which is a completely different feature.
USB Disk Mode - Disk mode works very well, but charging is not implemented on all iPods yet. Which means you can use iTunes on your iPod or access it's contents directly by browsing there, but it may not charge. They didn't list which ones charge or not.
yeah usb charging is a separate feature. It's rather a minor one, since USB doesnt provide enough current to charge the device while its in use, so it only prolongs the battery life, and charging via usb when powered off takes an inordinate length of time.
well i installed it, i had a scare because i could not get the bootloader to install but i got it eventually (30min). Every thing is working fine so far.
