If you want to purchase DLC (new songs) get Rock Band 2, because Rock Band 2 has thousands of songs you can choose to download if you're getting it for either the 360 or PS3 (the Wii is getting the songs but slowly). While GH5 doesn't have that much compared to RB2 and there isn't that much variety in the DLC.

If not, look up the song selection and judge which one you like better.

    Rock Band 2
    (DLC)

    GH5
    (DLC)

Compare. I personally prefer RB2 because of the more varied setlist and I like downloading the songs I like. Even though GH5 has more (somewhat useless) features than RB2. They're still the same game, you're still hitting buttons.

Well, it's all about the feel of the game.
In the newest GHs you have a bigger error ratio when pressing buttons for notes. Hence making it easier to pull off crazy-sh** solos. While RB2 has more of a GH2 feel (I'm mainly talking about hammer-ons/pull-offs here). GH also have a more cartoonish atmosphere while RB is more 'realistic'.

I'm pretty much sold to RB as of now. I like the features more. I also feel like playing a kid's game when I play GH so it's a buzzkill for me lol. You also should take the guitar controller in consideration. Most people don't like the RB one (I'm fine with it, but you can buy adaptors that let you use a GH one).

All in all its your pick, you should at least check out the song list on both. This could become your main choice tool.

My friend had the same problem and he has decided to get Guitar Hero 5 as well along with another guitar. I'm hoping that's the better choice...

i've played rockband more, so i'd go with rockband 2, but since you have gh5 now, there's no sense of spending more money on rockband unless you need it desperately.

i would personally never buy the games. just download them. not really worth the $50 to me. i could buy a better game for that much (Metroid Prime Other M)

    i can't believe what i'm reading.

not had all that much experience of RB but i've never liked it much, i have all the GH's and apart from the Aerosmith they are all great.

gh5 (includes band hero as it's based on the same system) is awesome although drums are harder then world tour which i guess is better if you want realism and it's good that you can play multiple of the same instruments compared to only one of each.
you can also just put it on random sort of jamming session (never paid attention to what it's called) and pick up and drop out as the song continues which is good for party events.

also drums are far superior on GH then RB so if drums is what you want to play gh is the choice

my suggestion for anyone would be to have the GH kit and then you can play all the games rather then the RB kit and the drums suck for the GH games (one less pad and the kit doesn't feel as nice to play, you get that little bit more realism on the gh drums with the raised cymbals).

rock band has raised symbols as well....though they're separate from what i have seen.

the only GH game i would buy would probably be Guitar Hero Metallica.

i have played both games and i liked rockband better. don't know why. just do.

GH's drums aren't any more realistic than Rock Band's set up. Rock Band's set up is more flexible when it comes to charting. The hi-hat is to the right of the snare, not to the left or above it like GH has it. RB has the set up that it switches the hi-hat back and forth between the red and yellow pads. Along with the toms being below the hi-hat, most common set-ups have the toms high.

GH5 may have more features than Rock Band, the set list is abysmal, they tried to please everyone and with that they pleased no one. And it doesn't include Band Hero. The only thing it shares with Band Hero is the same engine, even then you can't export most of the songs from Band Hero (even if you can) or GHWT or Smash Hits.

i don't know what drum kits you have been on but the hi-hat always sits to the left and above the snare unless you sit a kit up the wrong way round (left handed) and although toms are traditionally above the bass drum the cybals are higher.

but whatever i love the GH instruments and i prefer the games, and the set lists don't suck at all i guess it depends on what you like and i've got a pretty eclectic taste so for me GH games are better.
i thought i'd be disappointed with band hero but there are a surprising amount of good songs

I got my right and left mixed up. Blegh.

I haven't looked at Band Hero's setlist but if it's like GH5's, I'll pass. Lego Rock Band surprised me with it's songs, The Hives and Ghostbusters, along with I can export all the songs from that disc to play it on RB2 makes the package a whole lot sweeter. My point still stands, RB has the best and the most amount of DLC, along with you can export 97% of RB1 songs and you can export the songs from Lego Rock Band. You also get 20 free songs if you get RB2 new. GH is still playing catch-up in that department.

And yeah, GH5's setlist is ugh, the songs are too varied and are mostly "hey that's cool to play", but they aren't fun.

i guess it's ok if you have live but i'm banned so DLC makes no difference to me

i like that about the game

RB beatles was a massive let down

No way man, I think it's the best music game by far. If not for the song selection (I love the Beatles) but for the genuine amount of work and love given to the game. Getting five stars on every song gives you interesting tidbits about each song, getting five stars on challenges gets more information about The Beatles. Along with the special little silly videos, and the dreamscapes, along with that it's not just Rock Band with The Beatles in it, along with that the Beatles is the only artist in the game. Also vocal harmonies are fun. 45 songs on the disc is understandable considering that there were no master tracks at the time when The Beatles made music, so Harmonix had to reverse engineer every track.

I find GH: Metallica and Van Halen ridiculous considering that they're both essentially Guitar Hero 4.5 (tiny upgrades to the engine) with most songs being by Metallica/Van Halen. Sure if you're a Metallica/Van Halen fan, you'll love it, but it's a lot less new stuff when compared with The Beatles: Rock Band.

Comparing both the amount of work given in either games, the amount of newer content and amount of songs by the artist's game (Beatles has 45, Metallica has 22, Van Halen has 28). The Beatles is superior in that respect. Musically, it's subjective. Even though the difficulty in The Beatles is lower than both, they're all fun songs for any instrument. Van Halen is easily a money grab, hell, they finished the game a long time ago, it's not even based off of Guitar Hero 5's engine, it's from Metallica's engine.

Also, Guitar Hero totally sucks when you're singing, there's no way to see how well you're doing in the middle of a sentence. That and the pitch and detection is still off. Rock Band almost got it the first try around, RB2 got it, and The Beatles surpassed it.

i don't really like any of the dedicated band games. they get boring fast (unless you love the band obviously).
most of the time they don't even have their best songs.

i felt the Beatles one was a let down because i rushed to get it thinking "yeah this will be great" and it bored the crap out of me in 5 mins and it was no fun to play at all.

i've not actually given metallica a go yet but that's cause i don't really like metallica ( mega over rated and have like 3 good songs at best) although i do think the support for double bass pedals on drums is awesome although i'd never be able to do it.

GH van halen isn't even out so i got no comment for that although as said i don't like games based on one band.

i'm not to bothered by RB i just prefer GH in every way i guess the things you hate are the things i like especially the set lists as GH has a mass of songs i love and RB has few.
also having no XBL GHs & BH give me more songs to play i guess if i still had live and i got RB first maybe i might have a different opinion but then again i like the Gh instruments better and it makes no difference anyway because now all the games support all the instruments i've got the kit i like and i can play all the games.

again i was really surprised at the set list for BH it's so fun to play.

and sorry but Styx - "Mr. Roboto" takes it for the win ;D over any game :p
