well, the other day i was talking to this kid about sonic and i asked him about Dr. Robotnik. and he said, "WHO?"

i was SO shocked! i tried to tell him that dr. robotnik WAS dr. eggman, but he didn't believe me...

i absolutely hate the name dr. eggman cause i grew up with sonic beating up Dr. Robotnik!!
so i always refer to him as Robotnik even in the newer games....

    What do you think?

oh i know. they should have just left robotnik the way that he was. i mean, nintendo left bowser the same all of the way through (almost), but sega just HAS to change their best bad guy ever!

I was under the impression that Eggman was just his Japanese name. Robotnik being the name released in English.

They didn't change his name or try to introduce a copy of Robotnik, they just started referring to him in some of the newer games as his original name.

So many people like the original, Japanese, better. I personally don't care, and when I grew up with the US games and TV shows it was Robotnik. When I started watching the Sonic based Anime from Japan it was always Eggman.

interesting...i mean i knew that they were the same, but i just prefer to call him robotnik cause that's what i grew up with since i was 4 or 5!! but yeah, even in sonic drift (j) they call him eggman!

i dunno.......most do a lot.....especially the "know it all" americans....i know a lot of those kinds of people....:(

I've never seen someone use the word "Eggman" in a Youtube Poop... I always loved "Robotnik".

    However, Sonic's the Walrus.

It'd be better as Robotnik being "Egghead", but then it'll totally destroy the Beatles reference!!!!

For those who don't know how robotnik/eggman came about, here's a brief summary:

Dr. Robotnik was originally a kindly scientist named Dr. Kintobor, who was friends with Sonic. He invented Sonic's power sneakers that allow him to run at very high speeds. Unfortunately while he was testing them, he broke the sound barrier, destroying the testing equipment and turning himself blue. When the smoke had cleared, Kintobor suggested they had lunch, but all that was left in his fridge was a rotten egg. While crossing the lab carrying the egg, Kintobor tripped over a cable and went head first into some machinery, which exploded. The explosion drastically changed his appearance and drove him insane. The letters on his name tag had also re-arranged themselves to spell Robotnik. This event is also where he gained the nickname eggman (his new appearance resembled an egg).

I always preferred the name Dr. Robotnik too. It just sounds more in line with the franchise. Eggman sounds really lame and seems like it should be in a Mario game or something. I wonder what the reasoning was for changing to such a weak name.

    I prefered dr robotnick...

Egg man-just because his head is shaped like an egg...

I'm not even gonna bother-it's suits but it takes off the fact that he makes bad robots that do cool stuff..

The first ever game I remember really playing was sonic 2 on a mega drive (which I was eventually given) at the age of 3 or 4. Those are some of my fondest memories.

There was no eggman in that game.

    -=EDIT=-

actually that's a lie, I remember playing tetris and super mario world on my mum's gameboy before I got my megadrive

the nickname eggman originated in sonic the comic and was not used in games until later (sonic adventure uses it).

    cool! i didn't know that!

i read a sonic chapter book when i was younger about how sonic lived with his uncle on mobius and robotnik was adopted by sonic's uncle...then sonic's uncle made the power ring and gave it to sonic, but robotnik wanted it and turned evil.

i don't really like the story......but i guess it was wrong!

    Eggman... lol.

Only char I liked when playing Sonic games was Tails.

If I had to decide what name should this evil dude have, I'd say Eggman, just because it sounds hilarious :p
