It's nothing official yet, but it's something I've been planning to start on this site, especially with summer around the corner. I'd like it if I could get some opinions on whether or not I should get the ball rolling on this. I'm already competing in something like this on another site, so, admittedly, I'm lifting ideas from the guy who's hosting it on the other site. Basically, it's a mario party-like structure with challenges centered around retro games. I'm thinking since the community here is much larger than the aforementioned site, we could have four teams of two or three people, and probably more than just myself to keep the competition rolling, depending on how fast-paced this might become. These teams will advance on a game board by rolling a digital die, and they'll land on one of seven tile types (which, if we're letting the contestants roll, we may want to have a random outcome generator decide since players could constantly reroll until they get the number they want), some of which I may axe: Plus points: Get points, which will be used to open the gate, just for landing on the spot Minus points: Lose points Plus coins: Get coins to buy items with Item: Get a free item to advance your progress or hinder another players' progress Challenge: Compete in a challenge to receive points TRAP!: See items VS.: If two teams are on one of these spots anywhere on the board, or they are on the exact same spot, a vs challenge will take place. This can be either a direct netplay battle (i.e. Street Fighter or Smash Bros. I may make an exception to the "retro only" rule if BOTH teams own a specific next-gen game) or a high score battle. The victor will take points from the opposing team. In the event of a three-way battle... We'll worry about that later. Ideas I have for items are as follows. Likewise, I may axe or change some of these: Stopwatch: Cause a team to miss a turn Hitman: If a player presents this item while a challenge is being presented, a player who volunteers for a challenge will be benched TRAP!: Place a trap on any spot on the board. The resulting trap will pin the team with a challenge a tier or two higher than they are supposed to receive. No bets can be placed on these challenges, and you'll thank me for that if you're planning to compete, since these challenges, if lost, will cause you to lose points, but will greatly pay out if you manage to complete them. Bunny ears: Move twice the amount of spaces the die turns up. Mercy token: Receive an easier challenge on a challenge spot. This can also be used to make the trap challenge easier. Blood token: Cause an opposing team to receive a harder challenge. Once again, can also be applied to a trap challenge (god, I'm evil...). Mafia token: Make a bet on an opposing team's challenge (in this event, you may bet on whether they succeed or fail) Wealth token: Increase the payout of a challenge Poverty token: Decrease the payout of an opponent's challenge All items can be attained through a rare item tile, or be bought from the item shop at any time using coins, which will be earned through challenges just like points. Here are the challenge types (not the difficulties) for when you land on a challenge space. Solo: You complete the challenge by yourself, and your teammates will bet points. If you lose a challenge, unless IT'S A TRAP, you will not lose points or coins. However, you WILL lose any amount of points or coins your teammates (or opponents who used a mafia token) bet. Co-Op Challenge: If a game supports two-player co-op, two teammates can cooperate on a challenge. Wait, there are NES and Genesis emulators that support netplay, right? VS. Challenge: Via either netplay or solo high score battle, two teams will compete to take each others points and coins. TRAP!: These challenges are meant to beat you down. Except for mafia token users, you cannot bet on these challenges. If you lose, you WILL lose points and/or coins. Okay, as for the gameplay structure, as I said, it's MP-esque, so it's a board game. I'm contemplating whether we should give players the option to move either forward or backwards. In either case, I'm also contemplating whether all tiles on the board should be visible, and the judges roll for the players, or if what type of tile the team REALLY lands on should be decided by a random outcome generator, giving the players the freedom to roll for themselves (that's how it goes for the RGC on the other site). The board structure itself is basically a three-layer Monopoly board. Once you recieve enough points, you can proceed to any of the four gate tiles to proceed through the gate. Each ring, which will henceforth be known as: The GREEN Zone The YELLOW Zone The RED Zone Each have differing difficulties for challenges, with a FINAL zone. The final zone will consist of a three-part challenge which will reward a massive amount of points, almost ensuring victory. The different difficulties are EASY – Green Zone MEDIUM – Green and Yellow zone HARD – Yellow and Red zone VERY HARD – Traps and Red Zone WTF – Traps and rarely on Red zone The game will end when one team obtains a certain amount of points, being declared the victor. The main reason I don’t wanna get this rolling yet is because I don’t have many challenges at my disposal to issue, nor do I have a game board created (if someone would like to do that for me, PM me and I’ll give you the details. I may even guarantee you a spot in the competition… I’m just really bad at designing stuff like that). If you’re going to send me ideas for challenges, please describe them in this format: Difficulty Title of the challenge Game Objective – What needs to be done to earn the points. Rules As for suggestions on gameplay mechanics, I mainly need to figure out these major things: 1. How many points will be needed for victory, and also how many points and coins each challenge type/difficulty will pay out, including the Final Step, which I think should reward 25% of the needed amount. 2. How many coins each item should cost 3. On that note, if any of the items or space types should be axed, added, or changed. 4. A choice in the layout of the board -Random outcome with the freedom to roll for yourself -Fixed outcomes, but judges roll for the contestants -As well as how many players to a team 5. If you, the gamer, are interested. On that note, it may be early to be considering contestants, but if anyone wants to sign up for this now, send me a PM and, if we have more than 16 volunteers (depending on how many players there should be to a team), I’ll issue singups challenges from various sources including the VG masters club, and the RGC I’m competing in now in order to weed it out to 16. This competition should be considered to be for serious gamers only.
I respectfully disagree. Depending on how fast-paced this is, this may take a while; much longer than the winter break would allow.
