Hey, wondering if anyone knows how to solve this problem. The files on here are really small in size compared to the actual size of the game when unrared. How come when I RAR them myself it doesnt compress it as much?? I dont know if it would help any by using the rom trimmer then RARing them but that is besides the point. I would like to have all my games trimmed and then compressed back to the small size that they are when RARed. It would save me a lot of space and time. I wont have to unpack them, trim them and then rename. If anyone knows anything about this let me know please. Thank you
Also, you have to understand what the compression is doing. It's just getting rid of redundant data and empty space (but keeps track of it so you can get the original file back later). So what you end up with depends on what is in the actual file you are compressing. Trimming a ROM gets rid of empty space and redundant data, so Trimming then RARing your file won't give you much of a benefit. It's the same as compressing an MP3 or JPEG file. Those file formats are already compressed, so you can't get much out of compressing them further.
Ah rofl, you're trimming them. When you compress them, it really compresses all that redundant data added onto the ROM from the Cartridge form. Test it, by compressing a clean untrimmed ROM with 'Best'. You wouldn't get results from compressing a trimmed ROM.
Just to test, I took Suikoden Tierkreis from this website, 186MB RAR file. Uncompressed it's a 256MB ROM. Recompressed it with WinRAR 3.80 at "Best" and it turned back into a 186MB file. Make sure you use the latest version of WinRAR (for the best compression algorithms) and the "Best" settings.
I think you guys missed the part in my first post where I stated "I dont know if it would help any by using the rom trimmer then RARing them (((but that is besides the point.)))" lol I knew that about the empty data, but the overall problem is that I cant get the file back to the size it originally was before I unrared it.
Wait, I must have been on some major crack or something. Why when I do it now on "best" it gets me back the same size as the original RAR?? AND NOT BEFORE! Ive done this already more than once with the ROMs and it never worked. I have experience with compressing files as back in the day when we shared DVD movies in 7 part files its how we used to pack them for sharing. I gotta run a few more tries and see whats up, this is freaky. Other than posting on the wrong board (meant to be on non emulation help-sorry to be picky) your not a "noob cake", you simply just didn't know... Lol, I never compress my files once un-compressed, that is what my 1TB external drive is for XD Prehaps you changed an option or something, when ever I tried my files would end up as the same size, just all in one place (or 1 or 2 MB off) ... Yes it's a good community, it's also VERY patient with it's users...I always wonder if I'm spamming the board with my useless dribble, or if I'm sub consiously trying to get my status up (like what I did on gamespot-lvl 21 I think XD)
