R4 won't open options menu or show files other than .ROMs

I've had a China-bought R4 SDHC Dual-Core for a few months, and this problem's been around on it for about half that time, and is beginning to get on my nerves as I can't change the theme. Again, I can't open up the system menu, and only folders and ROMs themselves show up. It's not the theme's problem, as I eliminated that theme (but backed it up), and now the system is running on basic black and white, but the problem persists. I believe it may have to do with a cheat file I installed, as the problem showed up not long after using the instructions for installing it. I'm sorry, I had the dealer install the kernel and I have no idea which one it is.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. I'm kinda sick of this theme, and I'd like to change it, and change some of the preferences. I am thankful that it even works at all. I'm currently backing-up the entire contents of the SD card, after which I will remove all cheat files to see if that helps any.

Thanks. Don't see my R4 in the list. It's a good R4, I'm loathe to buy a new one at this point (being Dual-Core, it doesn't lag whatsoever, even in game reviews that complain of lag or framerate problems, this seems to eliminate those, and saving progress happens in like 2 seconds on most games).

I've removed all cheat files, hasn't helped. Wondering, are there any files I might want to try deleting? I have a hacker friend who can probably help, worst comes to worst.

 

I personally do not know much about carts that much. Xenirina would be able to help you but he is not online now. I am sure he will see this thread and help though.

Okay, looks like you've got a dodgy card or SD...
Best choice is to install a new firmware.

Have a look at this thread.
Your card isn't on the list, but that doesn't mean it wont work.

So, what is the URL listed on your card? It'll be something like www.r4isdhc.com.

 

r4isdhc.com is what is listed on it. This card's universal, it works on any DS including the 3DS (but not 3DS roms, just NDS roms), but it says 3DS DSi on the front, I'll post a pic later. Not sure if its a game, I only download older ones.
If I need to update the firmware, I'll ask that one friend of mine.

 

Updating the firmware is quite easy.

Going by gut instinct, download this.
Then format your MicroSD (backup games, saves etc.) and copy the files from the "R4-SDHC_R4i-SDHC TTMenu" folder.

That should work. Then download themes for it from here: http://www.ndsthemes.com/themes/title/ysmenu

I'll wait to upgrade the firmware until I have that friend with me (which will probably be a week at most); I'm somewhat klutzy in these sorts of things, and China-bought tech can be so... stubborn (nice way of putting it ).

 

Flashcards are all the same, and most of them come from China anyway.
