Question about PS2

I have a few questions about the PS2

    1. How do I play burnt "backups" on it? Do I need a modchip or something? (I've heard about a swap magic thing but I don't know much about it.
    2. Will installing a modchip or something similar wreck it?
    3. Is it possible to rip actual PS2 games & burn them to a disk?

1.Mod chip-like I just done-or the magic swap-but I have no clue on that-but ps1 and ps2 burnt games work-same compatibility as real disc-but some burnt ps1 games loose music on account of CDDA files (mortal kombat trilogy plays but no background kmusic)

2.It may wear down the system far quicker-so if you got one cheap then no harm done really-also when burning disc make sure you use 4x write speed-same for anything to do with a ps2 iso file being burnt-can go slower I suppose-that's just what the modchip people told me.
(mod chip people told me it can preserve the laser inside if done by 4x-less stress I guess)

3.I use alchol 52% to just rip the iso out-or img burn-just have the speed at 4x and you should be fine-if any errors occur it'll be the result of the burn-not the ripping process.

(Img burn is the best for making backup disc-but great for burning as well-nero can too but speed options won't go below 10x for some reason)

I'd say look into modchipping your machine or even looking into the usb loaders, i know very little about them but i have heard they work.

I say look into the chipping rather than the swap magic simply because my experience with swap magic hasn't been great. The method works fine however the disk can be VERY temperamental and if you get the one which involves replacing the lid of your PS2 it can be even more fiddly and dust gets to the laser easier and on the whole its just not worth the hassle. :)

If you can get a cheap ps2 if something bad happens, and a cheap modchip installed, you should be fine...

Next is to get my gamecube chipped-gotta wait a week :(

So where can I get a modchip from? And how do you install it? If it's anything difficult then I'll have to find someone else to do it for me.
You can make backups with Imgburn? How ???

modchips have to be soldered inside the playstation 2. However, there is one called the Memor32, which is basically a memory card that can be connected to a computer. It is possible to install a firmware that allows playing of backups.

    Soldering... Crap.
How doe's connecting a memory card thing using Memor32 to a computer let me play backups on the actual PS2? Is the firmware thing part of Memor32 or something different?

the firmware is a 3rd party addon to the memor32. basically the idea of the computer connectivity is to back up your saves

Ah I see now. Bit hard to understand. Could you give me a link or something Loony?

    http://www.memor32.com/

one firmware here: http://www.mementoteam.com/ This firmware is defunct and not very compatible, but is required to install a much more compatible one, which is here: http://ps2-project.org/ps2p/includes/wiki/index.php5?title=ESR (scroll to the bottom)

So the Memor32 is a memory card that can transfer my saves to my computer & the firmware allows me to play backups?
Now I just need to find a place that sells it, hopefully not online. And get Alcohol 52% Wait, is there a difference between Alcohol 52% and 120%?

    it costs around 50 euros

52% is free and has less features than 120%

Alright thanks for the help Loony :) I'll have a look around to see if I can find it somewhere, or I'll wait a few weeks 'till I have PayPal.

    ...where do you live again?

If your in aus-there are shops that can do the modding for you-I just walked into laverton market and got my ps2 and 'cube done :)

$70 each though...cheaper to buy and chip ($20 in some places) and do it yourself...but I alck the steady hand to do it-and my ps2 was pissing them off-it failed 10 times during a test run-requireing more work-lucky it didn't cost extra XD

    www.acegamingstore.com

These guys are in my state-you can mail your system to them if you wish-I may shop in person here but I trust these guys with mail order stuff-if anything did happen-blame asutralia post :(

Give them a ring-but you would have to send your ps2 to them and they return back-give them a buzz/ring/email and see how it goes...

I'm surprised there isn't mod chip services your way-you tried googling that with results set to australia?

Heck-I would suggest-when you get time-to WALK to some locla market places-like laverton here-it may have a service-but it would be outta they way...COUGH*illegal*COUGH.

No I haven't tried googling, I probably should :D Market places, laverton?? What are they?

...well if your in WA no point really-that's in VIC XD

Market palces can hold just about everything-but the further away from majour cities the better-and this place is in the outtern western suburbs-just check out the local markets and see if they offer it-the big "WE DO MOD CHIPS" sign's can't be missed once outside-but don't ask the store people who don't have such signs-might get you into trouble or the old line of "that's illegal" get thrown in your face.

I don't think they have any market place things down here :( probably do in Perth though.
Well, apart from the farmers markets, but I doubt they have anything other then food :D
