psx chrono cross is it a sequal or prequal to chrono trigger?

I'm just wondering is chrono cross a sequal or prequal to chrono trigger? it looks almost like the same main character from chrono trigger hence why i am asking.

 

It is a sequel, you should play more tho find out.
The story's a bit confusing though.

sorry i didn't know that is why i was asking i've only played bits of the nds chrono trigger so i wasn't sure if chrono cross had anything to do with chrono trigger or not.
