okay, i have a friend that has a PSP (not modded) that won't read the disk anymore, the laser seems to work fine and the disk still spins. he's tried with multiple disks and nothing works. i've tried google searches and nothing really helps or even makes sense. any suggestions?

Is it still under warranty? If so just send it in to get fixed.

Make sure the UMD hasn't got any dust or scratches on it and try cleaning it with a soft cloth. If it is heavily scratched then it is most likely the UMD causing the trouble. But because you have tried many games i don't feel it is that which is the problem. You should just blow onto the laser and remove any dust from it. Do not touch it! If it doesn't work then it could be the PSP dead. In that case say bye-bye unless you have warranty.

he has a white PSP, i believe the old mod-capable ones. so no warranty to my knowledge
and we've tried blowing on the laser, no effect. We've tried a lot of different google searches already like hard reset, and some we didn't wanna do, like pushing around the laser's base left and right or something...

It might be the firmware that is broke try installing the latest OFW (official Firmware) or CFW (custom Firmware) that "might" fix it but unfortunately i have no way of pointing out the exact fault over the net
