    Tekken 5: Dark Resurrection
    Published & Developed by: Bandai-Namco
Release Date: US (July 25, 2006
    Japan: July 6, 2006
    Europe: September 15, 2006
    Australia: September 14, 2006
    Genre: Fighting
    Platform: PS3, PSP

One of the first few games to ever ‘wow’ the PSP scene was Tekken 5: Dark Resurrection. One of the most popular fighting games made its way to the PSP, and boy did it deliver! Sure it’s a bit toned down to fit the PSP, but its way better than Tekken 4 for the PS2.

So what does Dark Resurrection have to offer? Well, it’s nice to choose from over 30 characters, that’s a lot to choose from. Plus, 19 amazing backgrounds during the fights definitely caught my eyes. Although, it boasts these awesome features there are a few problems, since very few games are perfect.

Right now, let’s focus on all the good it has got. When you first boot up the game, you’ll notice the tutorial. Trust me, its really helpful. I haven’t played Tekken since the PS1 days, and I was really excited to try it on my handheld. This tutorial was very well scripted and gives newbies and returning veterans a chance to familiarize themselves with the control scheme of the game. As usual, most fighting games have face buttons and two or three button combinations to execute some spectacular move. Well, Tekken 5 take is to another level, you can do up to 10 button combinations to massacre your opponents. 10 continuous hit, then an awesome moves! Granted, it does take a little while to get used to the controls, I would say probably, 4 hours of good training will make you pull off some of the most advanced moves for the game.

    Nothing like a cat fight

Other than an insane control scheme, the game boasts a huge amount of unlockables; like art and some videos too. Though I didn’t say this before, you have every character available from the start of the game. No need to conquer everyone’s storyline, unless you want to…
But back to unlockables, every character is able to be customized; their outfits can be changed, they can have wings placed on them, halos, wristbands, even belts and auras can be equipped to change the appearance of the characters.

Other than customizing the characters, what else can this game offer me?
Well, you can take a trip down Dojo mode. Here you fight against several characters and your goal in each dojo is to become the #1 rank, until you are finally ranked first in the world. Sure its fun, but it takes a while. Then other mini-games will keep you occupied for a while like Gold Rush or Tekken Bowling, two of my favorites. Also back is the Story Mode, basically you just play through 7-10 battles depicting the story of the chosen character.

The best element of this game though is its graphics. I was amazed when I played it. Not only does it hold it own against other graphical powerful games, but I think it blows away the competition. The cutscenes are very beautiful and crisp details are present. Also really nice is the multiplayer, both ad-hoc and infrastructure modes, along with game sharing, makes this game memorable. Another addition is the ghost downloading and uploading. Here you can fight against other people’s ghosts and even send yours up.

The only problem with this game is the time it takes to master the controls, as I said earlier, it takes about 4 hours to fully grasp the mechanics of the game, but otherwise, it’s golden.

    Scores:

    Presentation:
Lovely setup, nice stories and several game modes to choose from, it’s worth the while. 9/10

Graphics: It’s like God came down from heaven and made this game for us, though He messed up a little because there is a little lag. 9/10

    Sound:
Of course classic remixes rock, and some new sound is thrown in here and there. Love the special sounds when you knock character down and the cutscene sounds are very realistic. 9/10

Gameplay: The d-pad makes it a little hard to play this game, sadly. But there was an attachment packaged with the special order of the game, but you’d have to be lucky to find one those now. 8/10

Lasting appeal: Loads of stuff to collect, ghost play and story mode fight will make you want to play this for a long time. 9/10

Total: Tekken 5: Dark Resurrection for the PSP receives 44 out of 50.

    Closing Comments:
It’s a game worth playing, trust me. I had a lot of fun and the story line is great. Nice graphics to back it up and its fun to play against other people in the world. Find it, buy it, download it… somehow, just get it.

    Happy gaming – dmac154

Nice. This one is the only Tekken game I haven't played yet. Is Dojo mode like Devil Within in the fifth Tekken and Tekken Force in the fourth one? It's the thing I have liked the most in the latest two PS2 Tekken games.
