Hey guys, my brother just got a PSP and sent me online to find out how he can avoid having to buy games for it... ie; download and play them.

I know nothing about it, I'm not a fan of the Sony franchise so I never really pay attention to it.

Even with my limited knowledge on Sony products I'm pretty sure there's nothing like what he's asking for. Doesn't the PSP need to be hacked?

So; here's the question: My brother wants to know if there's something like an R4 (etc) for the PSP, otherwise he wants to know how to get downloaded games to play on it.

There is not an item like the R4 for the PSP.
In order to play downloaded games on the PSP, you have to modify it. This involves using hardware and software exploits to install custom made Firmware.

Before you start anything you need to know what model PSP he has (1000, 2000, 3000, or PSP Go) and what current Official Firmware he has installed (this is in the System Settings menu).

The model number will be on the bottom or back of the unit, it will likely say something like: PSP2002 and a bunch of numbers, or PSP 3000 and a bunch of numbers.

Being that it is new, it is likely a PSP 3000, and may have above 5.50 firmware on it. Which means you won't be able to do anything with it.

I'll ask him when he gets back to my house later on. I think it's second hand so it might be an older model. But I'll find out for sure and let you know.

Is your brother getting you to do the modding. If so and you post the model etc,you may want to look at the tutorials here regarding using a Tool battery or what to do if you do not have one.
In Tiriths signature, you can click on the guide that MDS64 wrote, but dont go into it too much until we know what PSP your brother has.

Yeah he probably will get me to do it. He's not too good at that sort of thing. I'll find out the details for you all and then see what I'll need to do.
All I know so far is that it's white.

Just check the firmware number before you start using my guide-if the number is above "5.03" then you'll need to locate a pandora/tool battery to do it.

Also try to find out exactly which psp it is-if it's big and heavu then you'd be fine providing it has 5.03-if not just keep posting here and I might be aable to work it out...

If you can take pictures-just a angled rear pic can help ;)

Ya don't need a pandora battery like the psoter above said...

If you have the time and want to save cash (somewhat) try my soft hack tutorial in the tutorials section.

I can helpo as well-just update the psp too firmware 5.03.

You can't do it via psp and wifi-google the firmware and download that.

Once you do-show us the link and I will confirm if it's a good 5.03 update-otherwise chance yoiu might go past 5.03 or even brick it.

Alright, I now have to get my bro to hand it over for a while. Haha that may prove difficult... I can't use wifi anyway... I only have a USB wireless modem on my PC

If you are unsure or think MDS64 guide is not for you,get a Tool battery for $8 from Dealextreme and once you download the files/software you need,it should only take 30 minutes to do.

The new style battery illustrated is the slim type,so you may be better with the phat Tool battery. But the older type Tool battery cant be used for a normal battery, whereas the newer Tool battery can. LOL

The programs are rather short-you just download them to your pc and THEN copy and paste them to the psp-find a usb cable for it :)

Just pm me before you start...

(Now I'm considering of an idiot proof installer package...)

Me ethier-hence why I hacked mine.

    But here is something...

There are premade packs already made-problem is I cannot help you out and some have older files-the reason why I made this guide is incase you want to be using the latest (or last) m33 software.

They aren't hard to find-some hacking sites keep them.
