I didn't really know where to post this and I just kind of liked this section of the forum. :D

Anyway, right to business, I recently got a ps3 ( yes, I know it took me long, but there is kind of dark, long and horrible story that I don't want to talk about right now ) and I want to do walkthrough videos ( let's play style ;D ) I have got everythin needed, the console, the games, the audio recording software all I'm missing, is something that would record on screen gaming, so I was wondering, any of you know a awesomely good ( yet not very expensive ) recording device of this kind

    Thanks to everyone ;)

The best would be the HD PVR. This is the best quality video capture card you can get, but it runs you about $150. The cheapest is the EasyCap. It's only about $12, and the quality kind of shows it. You also can't record sound without extra cables, but the sound sucks anyways. Middle of the line is the Dazzle/HD Dazzle. It doesn't have the quality of the HD PVR, but it has good enough quality that nobody should complain. You should be able to record sound fine, though I'm not sure if it requires an extra cable or not. It will run you probably about $80.

You will also want some half decent video editing program, though there are ways to get even the best that won't cost you anything if you know where to go. If you have Windows, Sony Vegas Pro is the best for the average user (I guess there is one better, but it is complicated as hell). For Mac, Finalcut Pro.

thanks you a lot, I will wait for Dead Rising 2: Off the Record and begin my let's play serie, on top of that 80 bucks is fine, 150 is just out of my range. Oh and about the editing program, I tried Sony Vegas but it was just to much for me, I have pinnacle studio 14 and I know how to use it quite well ( not bragging, just saying ) I will stick to that one for now

Thanks anyway, see ya around ;)

I do have to say that the Dazzle's performance does show with PS3 footage. I guess I'm just so used to 1080p that 480i just looks horrible...

It's the same reason I've stopped doing my video reviews until I get an HD PVR.

And you will have to learn Vegas Pro's style of editing. There is nothing too difficult to do, especially for simple editing for LPs. It's practically just record, make a few visual tweaks, and render.

Pinnacle Studio 14 sucks. I'll be surprised if it even detects your mic, because it certainly didn't detect mine. Also, the program just eats up the CPU when recording compared to VirtualDub, which does a much nicer job, IMO.

I regret purchasing a middle of the road product. It is already about $60-70 for a Dazzle. Might as well go the whole $150 to get something of real quality. Even if it takes you twice the amount of time to get the other half (remainder) of the money, it is well worth the wait.

Don't bother with middle of the road shit. I wish I had known about the HD PVR before I bought the Dazzle.

And for a little advice, your audience knows that you are recording PS3 games, so they should expect your content to be recorded in HD. The Dazzle HD is not true HD since it's still using the crappy composite cables. The max resolution it will ever be able to capture is 720x480, no matter how you want to spin it. Even rendering your content in 720p is still really crappy, no matter what settings you use. I've tried every setting, even from youtubers who try to mimic HD PVR output, but it still doesn't compare to the real thing.

For Wii games, 480p is fine, but for PS3 content, the expectation is a little more. Or should I say the expectation for the PS3 is normal, and the expectation for the Wii is lowered. lol

you are a bit to picky, don't you think?, if I am buying Dead Rising 2:Off the Record I wiil probably have only enough money to buy a dazzle, besides I said I like pinnacle studio 14 and YES IT PICKS UP MY MIC, AND IT IS ALSO THE ONE I FIND EASY TO USE AND THE ONE I LIKE, SO YOU DO YOUR FANCY HD $H!T AND BE HAPPY WITH IT, I DON'T HAVE THAT KIND OF MONEY NOR THE TIME TO WAIT ABOUT 6 FREKING HOURS FOR YOUTUBE TO UPLOAD A 15 MINUTES HD VIDEO

A little bit overreacting, don't you think?

Look man, I'm telling you from EXPERIENCE, and if you want to waste $60-$70 and then find out that the quality just isn't good enough, be my guest. You'll be the one spending $210 for no reason.

...And you're smart for editing your post. I'm still gonna keep it here just so everyone else can see what you wrote. That, and I already made a full response to the original message. No need to re-respond to the new one.

And for the record, HD videos take 6 hours to upload to youtube if you upload uncompressed video. I've never had an HD video go past 40 minutes for uploading, and that's with the time limit of 15 minutes in length. It's all about the right compression/quality ratio.

Man I am just screwing with you :) hahahaha even though I checked and the HD PVR is $250, not $150 and I really don't have the money, I am enough openminded like to try the Sony Vegas ( again ) if you say that it will work better ( even though last time it didn't )

I didn't know you could compress the videos to upload them faster ( my mistake, oops )Going back to the recording device if it is for the best I'll try to get HD PVR but I don't think it will be possible since it is true I don't have that kind of money.

Anyway, I don't know why did I screwed up with you liked that, I was just bored and I tend to do that, I am REEEEEEEEEEEEEAAAAAAALLLLLLLLLYYYYYYYYY, REALLY SORRY, you were just trying to help and I acted like an @$$

Sorry again, and thanks for the tips :)

PS:what is your youtube channel?, might as well watch your videos, that may help me make a decision on which device to choose ( since you said you use Dazzle, it might help me see if the quality is as bad as you said ). If you think you can forgive and are willing to give me the channel's name, plese do over pm, ok?.

I feel terrible, I seriouly do :( ( Somehow I though it would be funny, turns out it wasn't )

Don't ever upload uncompressed video, its multiple megabytes a second. (SD DV is 3.5MB/s). A recent shoot I did came out to 50GB for about 3 1/2 hours of video. Also don't compress data before screwing with it as you're reducing the quality of your raw footage. Compression is the last stage of the process, after editing is complete.

Vegas takes time to get to grips with but once you do you wonder how you ever used anything else.

You can get a Hauppauge HD PVR for about $200 from Amazon. It's spendy, but worth the money in the long run for long term capture card use. It seems the price went up since the last time I checked, though that may just mean I was looking at an older model at the time.

do check reviews before buying anything, particularly expensive capture cards.

I have a pinnacle moviebox that I spent nearly $180 on and its bullshit, my freebie capture box is a lot better, the moviebox overheats after half an hour and starts dropping frames like crazy. Also it only works with pinnacles crappy software. The medion freebie I got with a laptop has never dropped a single frame, not even after hours of use.

I also have a matrox RT.X100, which is completely epic.

The Haupauge HD PVR is widely considered to be one of the best video capture cards out there. A lot of the game footage and such on youtube from more popular people (ie: Game play from the likes of Machinima as a whole) is done with an HD PVR and looks fantastic. There is also the Black Magic Intensity (http://www.blackmagic-design.com/products/intensity/). It is still good, but not as heavily recommended.

Matrox video capture devices are really good but expect to pay in the thousands for them. They're semi professional to professional level gear.

Definitely out of the price range of the average person who wants to record off of their TV. :3

huh, alright, it may take me FOREVER to get the money since I am still under 18 years old A.K.A I don't work but, what the hell I will try my best and get the HD PVR ( might as well check what's on the local market first though )

Btw, will I need extra cables to plug to my comp, tv and the ps3 at the same time???

  17. insanecrazy07

    insanecrazy07 Well-Known Member

Cables go from the PS3 to the PVR and then an extra set will go from the PVR to the TV. At least that's what it looks like from pictures...

And you really should get a job. If you don't pay for a car, your own bills and stuff, then getting $250 will be pretty easy in two week's time. Even 16 hours a week is pretty easy to do with school.

Good luck getting a job though...unemployment seems to hit teenagers as well.

The Haupauge comes with composite cables for one of the connections. You may have to supply some cables, I'm not too sure. At worst though, the cables you need will only run you a couple of dollars each. They aren't all that expensive.

You can be above average for shelling out that kind of cash for your recording device.

Generally you dont plug in to the TV, you use the preview window in the capture program. to use a TV as well you'd likely need some sort of composite splitter.

Why would you want it to your comp at the same time ?
