PS3 Questions

I recently posted a question asking about general PS3 info, and many thanks to everyone who posted there. I bought the PS3 and am Enjoying it Greatly, but I still have a few questions.

First off, is there any way I can download PS3 Downloadable Content online and then transfer it to my PS3. I heard that Borderlands (the only game I own at the moment) is releasing DLC soon, and wanted to get ahold of it, but my internet is shaky at best.

Also, I've heard rumors that Sony officials have found a way to emulate the PS2 on the PS3, so that PS2 games can be played. Any ideas on which direction this is likely to go? I'm planning on selling my old PS2 games, but if they can be played on the PS3, I may keep a few of them (most of them are going either way) I know it's not possible yet, but i've heard that it's possible to release it as a software update.

Also, what are my mod options. I can install Linux, but I see no real reason to do so, are there any softmods availiable for it.? Also, any softmods for the PS2, as I have a spare one that I don't need now.

Any answers are appreciated, even should they be just speculation. Try to keep them serious though.

No one except Sony can know if the PS3 will ever have downloadable upgrades to emulate PS2 games.

The PS3 cannot be modded to play download games.
There is no real reason to install Linux unless you like playing with stupid things. The PS3 cannot run games from the Linux OS, and you have to boot into the XMB to play them.

Why not just download directly to the PS3 instead of the PC first? I'm pretty sure the PS3 has an Ethernet port on it.

The PS2 can run backup games using a "Swap Disc" which you put in first, then change out to the burned copy of a PS2 game. Look up "Swap Magic" for the PS2.

Also, your topic is still on the very top of this forum, You can still ask questions there.

It has gigabit and built in 802.11g (some models may not have wireless).

I just meant incase he was worried about not having Wireless to connect.

I never actually looked to see if my PS3 had an Ethernet Port, I just assumed it did.

The reason I started a new thread was because the questions I asked there were already answered and it was fast becoming a game suggestion thread, which there are already plenty of. I asked that old thread to be locked.

The only internet availiable where I live is wireless and Dial-up. The wireless is expensive and the dial up is useless. My neighbor recently got wireless because she needs it for her work, and she gave me permission to use it. The signal isn't strong enough to do anything with the PS3 though. That's why I wanted to get the DLC online and transfer it, so I was wondering if that was possible.

I know there's no point in installing Linux, and I haven't. I was wondering if there's any other options out there. Maybe in the future. I read another forum post on another forum that Sony has patented a method to emulate the PS2 on the PS3. Article here:

I have also found this in a lot of different places, this is just the most in-depth one i've been able to find. This is what I was refering to.

Also, one more quesiton, Does anyone know a place where I can either find a list of supported Codecs for the PS3, or a place where I can download new ones? I have video files on my computer and I want to play them from an external hard drive, since I have no way to burn discs
    at the moment.

I'm pretty sure you can't get the DLC on there without downloading it directly.

There's not likely to be ps2 compatability because they use different hardware which sony removed to cust the system price. I haven't heard of them doing anything with it and since that article is almost a year old it seems like they're not.

    You can't mod it.

The article is actually only about five months old. 1-7-09, in a DAY-MONTH-YEAR format. (Most of the world uses this format, the US is the odd ball, I don't know exactly why).
