PS3 Mystery Error

I've had this PS3 Slim 120GB since March without a single issue until today.

Upon attempting to connect to a game on Modern Warfare 2, my brother was met with an error message and a sign out. The error in question is 80028ED6. I've tried Googling it, reading many different topics from many different forums, but this appears to be a sporadic issue that has been hitting many people for years now. I don't know if it's only Modern Warfare 2, as I have yet to try other games. Connection to the Playstation Store is flawless though, so it's highly unlikely the error is on my end.

About the most helpful info I could find was basically "Call Sony PS3 support and get a generic answer that probably won't help you."
If I can avoid that, I would like to.

Basically, does anybody have an explanation (not just a guess) of what the error really is, and what is a way to fix it? The most plausible thing I've found is that the PS3 skips the step where it searches for updates, and then it signs out since it skipped what is a vital step for it.

Thanks in advance for any help given.

Edit: It appears to have temporarily remedied itself. Here's to hoping it doesn't freak out again.

what ive seen around, the problem here is the firmware, that it has some sort of bug, this is happening to many people that updated it to the latest firmware, so one of the things you can do is just wait for sony to get another firmware out, and hopefully fix this bug. ive also seen around that some people manage to fix it by toying around with the internet settings, on the ps3, and router. you can try that too

Opps, also it said something about checking your firewall settings, mine is off for a good reason (all noobs around here XD)

I googled and found about seven explanations on top of that one (or two counting the firewall one). The top one is the only one that sounded plausible since the rest implied that something had just gone mysteriously wrong with your set up and that it was the owner's fault rather than the PS3's.

For now it's been fixed, but Sony has yet to confirm what that error actually means. Whether it's the update one, or an "Oops, we were tinkering and didn't tell anybody" error.

Like I said, it fixed itself for now at least, so I won't really worry about it until it screws up again.
