This is my Guide on how to Install Ubuntu Linux onto your PS3 System, by akash_1337 WARNING: DOING THIS WILL DELETE ALL DATA ON PS3. So Back-up your data before attempting this. I dont take any responsibility for anything that goes wrong!!!!!!!!!!!!! Things needed: 1. An USB flash drive or Memory Card or External Hard Drive. Whichever device you have chosen it must be Formatted into FAT32 so PS3 can read it. 2. An USB keyboard and mouse attached to your PS3. 3. Ubuntu 7.10 (Gutsy Gibbon) PS3 ISO image, which you can get from here: http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/custom/20071115-gutsy-ps3/ubuntu-7.10-desktop-powerpc+ps3.iso 4. A 20, 40, 60, 80GB PS3 (NOT PS3 SLIM) You will need to burn this ISO image on a blank CD with your favorite CD/DVD burning tool. OK Lets Get Started. First thing is you need to Partition Your Hard Drive:

Turn on your PS3, Log in and go to "Settings -> System Settings", scroll down until you find the "Format Utility", press X on it and go to "Format Hard Disk" (last option).
You'll be asked if you want to format your hard disk, so press "Yes" and then you must choose a partition setting for the hard drive. Select the "Custom" option, then select "Allot 10GB to the Other OS" entry and do a "Quick Format". When it's done, reboot your PS3.
Second Thing is to install the KBoot:

Get your USB or External Hard Drive
Make a folder called PS3, inside PS3 create another folder called OTHEROS
Download the otheros.bld from here: http://linux.softpedia.com/get/System/Boot/KBoot-26270.shtml
Put the otheros.bld file inside the OTHEROS folder
Now Plug your USB into your PS3, then go to "Settings -> System Settings -> Install Other Os" and hit X to detect and install KBoot.
Third and Final Step is to Boot and install the Ubuntu PS3 Live CD

Go to "Settings -> System Settings -> Default System" (press X) and select "Other OS".
You'll be asked if you want to quit your PS3 system and start the other OS (of course you do), so choose "Yes" and wait for the PS3 to reboot
Plug the USB keyboard and mouse to the PS3. In a few seconds, you will see "Ubuntu PS3 KBoot Loader" text on the top of your screen
Insert the Ubuntu PS3 Live CD in your PS3, type install and wait for the Live CD to load.
In a few seconds, you will see that sexy wallpaper of Ubuntu Gutsy and the installation wizard will appear.
Should you get stuck, go to this page for any problems during the installation: http://news.softpedia.com/news/Installing-Ubuntu-7-10-68645.shtml
VOILA, You have just installed Ubuntu Linux to your PS3 NOTE: Go back to the PS3 OS:

To get back to your PS3 OS, restart Ubuntu and, at the KBoot prompt
Type: boot-game-os
Hit enter on your Keyboard and wait for the PS3 to reboot and you'll see the XMB (PlayStation 3 operating system).
Re: PS3 - Installing Ubuntu Linux 7.10 Awesome! That is SICK. Never knew you could do that. Can you install TinyXP the same way? The PS3 was originally supposed to ship with a specially designed *nix-like OS, pretty cool that you could even install another OS on the PS3. Does it need to be a specially designed OS, or could it be any OS? Thanks.
Re: PS3 - Installing Ubuntu Linux 7.10 it needs to be an OS thats compiled for the powercell architecture used in the PS3.
Re: PS3 - Installing Ubuntu Linux 7.10 Sadly, this won't work on slims (as said above)... Siny blocked out that feature And only linux works btw.
Re: PS3 - Installing Ubuntu Linux 7.10 And even more unfortunately, you cannot play PS3 games from the Linux OS option. You have to restart and boot into the XMB in order to play your PS3 games
Re: PS3 - Installing Ubuntu Linux 7.10 The PS3 only Supports Linux based OS's, that is Fedora, Ubuntu and Yellow Dog as far as i know off Post Merge: [time]1261857046[/time] but you can play lots of different roms on the linux platform. but your right, it sucks that you have to boot back into the PS3 OS to play games
Re: PS3 - Installing Ubuntu Linux 7.10 Cool though. Ubuntu should be a powerhouse on the PS3. Sucks that Sony blocked that function out on the slim PS3s... Also sucks that you can't run any other OS that is not Linux. Is it possible that you can perform a distro update to 9.10?
