hello there! i was wondering if you could help me with this.
i recently got a used ps2 (not bought, it was a gift) along with a bunch of ps1 and ps2 games.

the only problem is that it's not playing any of the ps1 games (except for one).
all the games are in fine condition, and the ps2 DOES read them as ps1 games, but then gets stuck at either a black screen, or the ps1 logo screen.
i'd really hate to not be able to play any of these games...

    any suggestions to fix it?

    thank you much!! :)

Are these real games or copied ones?

Any idea if the ps2 has bee modified?

    And what are the games?

These are all real games, ff4, 5, 6, 7, 8, and 9, Chrono Trigger, and Monster Rancher 2 (after a few desperate attempts [attempts meaning just relentlessly trying over and over to see if the ps2 would play it and begging it to work], I actually got 9 to work. I've yet to try the others. Monster Rancher was the only game to play without any trouble.)

I seriously doubt the ps2 has been modified.
Speaking of which, i have been wanting to find a way TO make it into a pirate machine (I've yet to google such things since I have no money :/ )

are the discs clean? try changing your settings for PSX playback like the smoothing of graphics and loading speed also might just need to clean the laser lens is the also system the old "fat" model or "slim" if its a slim try flipping the console upside down and see if the games load, if so the laser is out of alignment and the housing its in is worn down on the tracks. Seems older models had a issue of being picky on what PSX games it would play.

If your console is modified, when you turn on, the mod name apears(my ps2 is modded with "matrix", so the matrix word show.)
You said that the console is used and ps1 games come too right? You probabiy dunno, but when you play ps1 on ps2, the ps1 cause damage to the disk reader, friends of mine got same problem due to play ps1 on a ps2 console.ONE MORE THING:have you tested these gamers in other console to see if the problem is with your console or the games? If you have a friend that have ps2 too, ask him to test your games on his ps2.To mod your console, I dunno in your country, but here in Brazil you can mod your console in shops that work with games, repair and stuff like that. I really hope that I've helped you.Good luck "punchy_v".

this sometimes happens to me aswell, usually the way to fix it is to turn on your ps2, open the disc tray, put in the disc and then wait for it for a while. Then when it goes to another screen close the disc tray. It'll say reading disc. If an error thing comes up then it's probably the discs. If you do conclude that it is the disc then you should buy a disc repair kit and see if that works.

You can use ethier a mod chip or a soft mod-booted by memory card and boot disc-both will cost money :(

Prehaps the games are in another region format-if it's a PAL machine playing NSTC then it'll fail.

Other than that I can only assume it's ether nearly dead or prehaps it has been modded-if bought second hand from a shop the places can't really check.

Maybe your ps2 just doesn't like squaresoft titles, maybe you should look into finding a cheap PSX to play them.

But some psx games don't work on ps2 models.

The original had issues with mortal kombat trilogy-it would freeze on the quit screen-real or fake.

It's just the code...the slims and phats are simerlar but may vary.

Can't do that, it takes laptop hard disks only.

the discs not foreign and are in excellent condition.
it's an old, fat ps2. it is not modified. since my friend owned this, i am going to assume it's an early model.

i played ff9 again last night, after trying for half and hour just trying to play the cd. no error screens or anything, it would either just go to a black screen for a while and go back to the menu, or in the rare case, finally show me the ps1 logo and eeeveeentually play ff9.

for now, i'm gonna figure that the ps2 just needs some lovin' before it let's me actually play. [insert sexual innuendo here.]
but thank you all for your help, it's still appreciated if anyone has ideas.

Seeing its a "fat" is most likely just worn out you can replace the lens reader and try cleaning it up, but the parts for the older model are not as easy to locate as the "slim" parts.
