Hello, I recently start using project 64 to play ( obviously ) N64 Roms but I have discovered some issues that happen in some games, the issues seem to appear in some determined games and once they do, there is no stopping them, there are some that I can live with because they are not that annoying like turning a wall transparent here and there but there are some that are really annoying like almost epileptic flashes on the screen, scramble menus screens and the one that I dislike the most, the loss of audio, video or both while a scene is playing

I wonder if you can give me a solution to this or maybe recommend me a better emulator.

Thank you all for your help

Welcome to RomUlation shadow 26 :)

It really is a bit sad that the original authors of Project64 have stopped working on the emulator as it indeed is one of the best N64 Emulators available with a great amount of emulator to N64 ROM compatibility ratios.

There are several things you can do to over come those graphical glitches, albeit for only the minor ones.

First off, before you "run" a particular ROM on the emulator take the time to look at the "colour" of the ROM's name on the emulator's "load ROM" window. If the ROM's name is in brown text it means that the ROM "might" not be 100% compatible with the emulator. Often the information in that same window will tell you what you could do to fix the emulator to run the game smoothly. Another way for you to determine the best thing to do to fix incompatibility is to access the emulator's "help files" which you can access in the emulator's "help" option in the menu bar.

Usually changing graphics renderer plug-in can do the thing & in some cases you need to access the hidden optional plug-ins that come with the emulator, but you must remember to return to default settings after you play the games that uses these hidden options as they are game specific & would cause issues with games that do not need them.

Another less intrusive thing you can do is try games that have issues with Project64 on another N64 Emulator, namely 1964:

    http://www.emulator-zone.com/doc.php/n64/1964.html

And hey! Would you look at that :) It seems 1964 is still being worked on!

I remember using 1964 years ago, it was pretty good. I had SM64 running on my 400Mhz K6 with 64MB RAM and a 4MB graphics card. Framerates were low but it was just about playable.

How do I gain acsses to that "hidden menu"? ???

Btw, other annoying thing that happens is that some games may not fit the screen ( the games only seem to be smaller than the screen, never bigger ) and about the brown names, all of mine look black to me

oh, and another thing, I may not have the latest version since I got from a friend not a site so... Do you think that could be it?

It's not a hidden menu but rather, hidden plug-in options.

You find them on the "plug-ins" window. You need to put a check on the check box that activates them.

Incidentally the instructions on how to use those options can also be found on the help files as well.

also, I downloaded th 1964 as suggested ( to test it out ) and it says some of my roms has "gfx" errors, what is that? and how do I fix it?

Those "gfx" or "graphics" errors are elements in a game's graphics that the emulator has problems emulating properly. When the emulator reports that your ROM may have graphics issues when you run it on the emulator it might be because said game is not fully supported therefor incompatible with the emulator.

By the by, what N64 game are you having particular problems with?

specially resident evil 2, but I also have some trouble with paper mario and theres other that I can't remember just now.

Well surprise, surprise!!! Paper Mario seems to work really well on 1964 but resident evil 2 is just another story completly, It freezes even before the main tittle screen loads -.-

Paper Mario is indeed one of the games that even Project64 has trouble emulating perfectly, good thing you found that 1964 does run it smoother though :)

Too bad about Resident Evil 2 though.

In the future before you run your N64 ROMs read the emulators' report on if they support a particular ROM or not & if they don't support it, hope that future updated builds will. And while you wait, why not join the emulator's support forums & report your own bugs & glitch findings so they can work on those too.

ok, I am going to do that, just oe more thing ( and it is totally off the wall ) this game was released for ps one as well, do you think I may have a better luck with a ps one emulator? if so, which?

You definitely have a better chance of playing Resident Evil 2 on a PSOne emulator. As for which one to choose I'd say epsxe as that's the one a majority of folks here use :)

ok, I will test it right now and let you know how it worked in a couple of minutes

    Thanks again

what are those "bios" the site ( The emulator zone ) says I need to download in order to get the emulator to work? and where do I get'em from? ( it also says I need some plugins btw )

never mind I got it running already, but I can't get the sound runnig on the cutscenes. If anyone has any idea how to fix this ( on epsxe ) I will be really greatful since I really want to enjoy this game to it's fullest ( I am a big fan, a new one though, so I haven't play ths game yet )

Thank you anyway, this is a great breakthrough, even with this flaw
