Proverbs & Wise Sayings

This isn't a game:

This thread is meant for posting proverbs & wise sayings AND Wise cracks if you must that are familiar on your homeland.

For people living elsewhere besides America, Canada, England or any country whose promary language is not English, please post sayings using your native tongues, then give us an english translation of it, no matter how "inaccurate" your translation maybe, that way we can learn a little from your own language.

I'll start things of with one of my favorite:

"GOD KNOWS HUDAS NOT PAY"

OK you might be saying,

Dude you broke your own rule,

Wrong!!

This is exactly how this saying is said.

Actually, this is something you would normally "read" if you rode public transportation in the Philippines. It's a play on the phrase "GOD KNOWS WHO DOES NOT PAY" & the name "Hudas" or Judas.

By itself "God knows who does not pay" is self explanatory.

You may get away NOT paying your fare, but God knows. Now juxtapose the name "Judas" or "Hudas" then you magnify the threshold of the phrase.

Oh one last thing, if you think public transport drivers here in the Philippines are dullards think again, if you cheat your way into getting a free ride, you'd be best to commit suicide 'cause if they notice you mooching, they'd chase you down & beat the living daylights out of you with a long steal pipe!

Madapa ka!

 

I don't know if it's related

Back in the 90's my classmates & I invented "codes" to replace "cursing", since it's not allowed in school

One of those codes was "madapa ka!", Which was a bastardisation of "Mother F....", it was hilarious really 'cause we got to curse our teachers like saying "Sir, ingat kayo baka madapa ka", or "Sir please take care or you might trip over", lol.

Anyway "madapa ka" in its real Tagalog meaning is "to trip over" or "to accidentally trip".

As I said I'm not sure if our curse codes were passed onto the next generation, if someone keeps telling you "madapa ka" for no reason, then that's our code, so "hala lagot ka", english translation:

Anyway here's another Filipino proverb:

"Tulak ng bibig, kabig ng dibdib"

Literal rough translation:

"The heart regrets what the mind speaks"

Somewhat more appropriate translation:

"Don't judge a book by its cover"

Yup, that's as close as I can translate this proverb, the meaning is similar, don't simply judge someone merely by looking at them.

But to an extent, my rough translation seems much better to relate what the proverb means. Not only is "Tulak ng bibig, kabig ng dibdib" used in respect with "Don't judge a book by its cover", the expression is also used in situations where a person feels guilt in saying, or doing something that has hurt (in the psycological& emotional aspects) another, usually someone you're more acquainted to. A good example is if you spread bad rumors about someone, then you realise that that person went nuts & commited suicide, "Tulak ng bibig, kabig ng dibdib"

 

a nice quote i once read. it can get confusing:

''if you knew the world was going to end, what special thing would you do?

mind that the world wouldn't end if you'd do that special thing.''

 

A variant of this would be:

If you knew that the World was going to end in an hour, who would you want to spend your last hour with?
