If England have been performing better than they did not only from the start of that match but from the start of the tournament, it would have been a better result for them as performance and consistency boost confidence and perhaps it could probably have translated into a victory over the Germans. If Rooney was performing like he did in Man United, England could have scored more goals and thus win the group in effect avoids Germany.
