hello all, i'm experimenting an issue with my laptop....it seems that after about 3 hours (all the time) it just tends to overheat (to about 80 degrees) and starts smelling like smoke. 0_o i'm mainly wondering if this is normal, or if i should get maintenance done.....

blow the vents out with canned air and invest in a cooling pad. if that doesnt help get it sent in for repair, its definitely not normal.

    what make is it?

okay, first i apologize for wrong area, my bad... and second, make and model

    Toshiba satellite P505-S8980

i've heard from other users that it's common, but i'm worried.....could it catch fire?
could it be caused by having no room to breath..................................................................

yes it could catch fire, but its probably unlikely to. it does need space around the vents, and use it on a hard surface such as a table.

i agree with loony get yourself a external cooling fan they cost ~$20 and if it still does it, send it back.. it shouldnt be overheating like that or smelling like smoke. if you cant afford a cooling fan get something to prop it up on so its not laying flat on the table and make sure your fans aren't blocked

will it continue to cool after shutdown? or do the fans only run while on.......

fans only run when its on, but the fact its not generating heat any more will allow it to cool over time.

[sarcasm] the fans run off the files in your recycling bin.. the more files the faster they'll go and the longer they last when your laptop is off [/sarcasm]

if your fans are running while the laptop is off you should get it checked out

if they run at all, they're the most quiet fans in the world.... :'(..... could an overheat cause a BSOD?

yes. More likely to just cause a sudden shutdown though.

yea, your processor(s) would shutdown as soon as it reached the limit. so just make sure you save your game frequently

well...WTF! explains why i was getting a BSOD every couple days, even though i kept re installing windows...... :'(!!!! GODDAMN geeksquad will never tell me shit...

    me:why's my laptop overheating?
GS(geeksquad):bring it in and we'll take a look.
    me:drives up there.
    GS: nothing wrong.
    ME:it overheats again...(BSOD!)
    me:calls GS
    GS:bring it in....

    and it just continues.......

haha your problem is the geeksquad they just want you to bring it in, so that you might buy something else while you're there..

    whats the BSOD say?

does it restart after you get it?

    how old is your laptop?

alot of things cause BSODs programs, drivers, etc

well if it was overheating it wouldnt restart, and if it did ..it'd shut off right after it started up again im betting its a program or driver you're using thats causing the BSOD.

if not then it sounds like you bought a craptop

I need the code from the bsod, not the 'previous shutdown was unexpected' one

the bsod page will show STOP 0x0000nnnn where nnnn are hexdecimal digits. I need that code and the line below in all caps. There also might be a filename at the bottom of the bosd, if there is that helps too.
