Premium download speed is no different :(

I bought premium membership because I didn't want to wait hours and hours to download isos. Before buying, I tested my possible speed with the 100MB download test thingy, and found that I could get just under 1MB/s. So I went ahead and bought it, but now my speed is still around 150KB/s (sometimes it goes up to 200, but that's still not worth the money).

Has anyone else had this problem, and is it possible for RomU to do something about it please? I've been faithful to you guys for years :p

    Thanks,
    - DamnoMan

There's plenty of bandwidth left on our end so I can only really do two things. First I recommend trying to use a download manager, I use down them all for firefox, this opens multiple connections which help combat the effects of latency on the network. If that doesn't work then I can give you a refund.

Ah thanks Seph, I will try that once my current download finishes. And don't worry about the refund by the way - I'm happy with all the other features which come with premium membership (namely the simultaneous downloads :p)

Thanks for your quick response :D

Going on what Seph said, use a Download Manager.
Nevertheless, even when I don't use IDM, I can get about 1MB/s.

Try clearing your cache and cookies for the site. Your browser might think you are still limited to speed (but not the other features of premium).

it has nothing to do with the browser, the speed limiting is done at the server end. My best guess would be it was a congested route or something.

    Okay. Just figuring out ideas.

Thanks for all your input guys, it's much appreciated. The download speed is still terrible with downthemall so I really don't know what to do. I will experiment a bit more, but on steam I still get about 6MB/s consistently (I have good fibre optic broadband *smug face*). Thanks again.

Can't you just check his IP?
Probably USA. They have awesome internet speeds.

    i laughed when i saw that ;x i really dunno why o.o

Actually, they don't. countries like south korea or the netherlands have a much higher average speed than the US. Also GEOIP isn't necessarily accurate, nor is it precise enough.

You'll be surprised, but I'm actually in the UK - Plymouth to be precise. I moved here recently and found that I was able to get Virgin Media fibre optic straight away. Seeing as I moved here from a much more rural area with slow speeds, having this kind of downstream is an absolute godsend :D

damn you - I'm stuck on 3mbit adsl lol. I have precisely 3 choices: BT in all its many forms (been there, done that, not going back), talktalk (I have one of their off brand services currently) or sky. We're screwed in rural gloucestershire. There's no cable in my part of the village (apparently is on the new estate, but not the old part) and although BT claim to be enabling FTTC on our exchange soon, im not holding my breath.

anyway, the problem you encountered was likely congestion, at times the transatlantic lines can get badly clogged (especially if there are outages in places) and that slows down traffic considerably.

Can you try getting a traceroute and sending it to me via PM? There's a how to in the last paragraph of this post: http://forum.romulation.net/index.php?topic=9108.msg92742#msg92742

Ouch! Haha, that's pretty much how it was for me - I lived in Shropshire 'till now (though I still consider it my home :p). BT have been OKish for me... at least, they are FAR better than Orange were. Orange gave us a download limit without mentioning it and, because we exceeded it, put a cap on our download speed. It wasn't too bad at first, but they kept reducing our speed after that until we were literally down to 10kb/s. That's no lie, they were well and truly taking the mick xD

I've sent you the details of the tracert, but please bear in mind that I did it during peak time and my friend was also streaming videos, so it may not be too reliable :p

that's what plusnet did to us. went over their limit, bam 128kbps for the rest of the month. despite the fact there was no way we could download the amount they said we were, because our line wasn't capable of it. additionally their equipment wasn't configured right and our connection just got steadily slower over time, while they repeatedly denied there was a problem, disregarding the graphs I sent them showing a clear deterioration. we got so fed up with it we switched to nildram. Orange is BT now anyway, they sold their LLU network to BT a few years ago.

that will have little or no effect on it.

Yep, just a massive pain in the backside. We were on Orange a good few years back anyway - long enough ago that they still had their own broadband tariffs. I've never even heard of nildram though, but then again I don't really pay a whole lot of attention to ISPs xD Are they much better?
That's good then, I just thought the latency looked a bit high (not that I'm anywhere near an expert on what it SHOULD be :p). When I play games online my ping very rarely goes over 100 unless the server is really really far away or something.

Yes, but they don't exist anymore, they got bought out by talktalk. At the time we switched they were way better than plusnet (faster, more reliable, better customer service). they were a business oriented ISP rather than a residential one.
