This happened to my friend often. Try deleting your emulators config file and reloading. You won't lose your save game.

    You using flashcart or emulator?

If you're using an emulator, then go here for some help.

I'm using no$gba and the same thing happens to me, it just goes black when I try to continue my game on Pokemon Diamond. I've visited the link above and copied the settings. The settings on my no$gba are:
Emulation Speed, LCD Refresh - Realtime, Auto
Sound output mode - Digital Stereo
Reset/Startup Entrypoint - Start Cartridge Directly
Sound Desired Sample Rate - High (44kHz) Best
    Video Output - 24bit True
    3D Renderer - nocash
    Multiboot Port - None/Disabled
GBA Mode - GBA SP (Backlight)
    Multiboot Normal/Burst Delays - Fast/Fast (Best)
GBA Cartridge Backup Media - Auto
Number of Emulated Gameboys - 1
NDS Cartridge Backup Media - Auto
Link Gamepaks - Gamepaks in all GBAs
Solar Sensor Level - Bright Sunlight
    Link Cable Type - Automatic

But still when I try to load my saved game it goes black for ages. Pretty much I am not able to play my saved game. PLEASE HELP!

This is the one that I've used. I play and finish the game with this setup.

    The first side:
    1. Unlimited MHz Disaster , 10%
    2. Start Cartridge directly
    3.1 - 24bit Ture color
    3.2 - nocash
    4. GBA SP (blacklight)
    5. Auto
    6. FLASH 512 BYTES
    7. Darkness

    The other side:
    1. Digital Stereo
    2. High (44Hz) (best)
    3. None/Disabled
    4. Medium/Medium (stable)
    5. 1
    6. Gamepaks in GBAs
    7. Automatic

BTW the game freezes if you change the sound output mode to none. Hope this help.

You need to choose the NDS cartridge backup media yourself. The auto setting doesn't work right. Every game has its own NDS backup media. You need to choose the right one for different games. i.e Pokemon Diamond(FLASH 512BYTES) but Digimon World DS(FRAM 32 BYTES)
