boot from your windows installation disc, when it gives you the option to press 'r' for recovery console, press 'r'. once you're in the recovery console and have the command prompt type 'fixmbr', say yes if it asks you to confirm, then reboot when it tells you to. Be more careful in future.

if you format the USB and copy the exact directory structure of the windows CD (all files, including hidden ones) then it may be possible to boot from it.

If you want to fix the MBR, I'd go download something like Ultimate Boot CD/ UBCD4Win. It's capable of booting from usb, and there are several mbrfix utilities in the package. It is an overall useful thing to have, IMO.

i have found that there are certain things you can and can't do with a usb device.
i one time tried to run windows from a usb hard drive and it wouldn't load. windows ran on a portable 2.5" hard drives. it loaded up the windows logo [the black screen with the progress bar] i believe and then some sort of an error.

i learned the hard way i thought that the grub mbr would load on the external hard drive but it loaded on my internal hard drive instead

it should tell you if you follow the instructions given, its a matter of if you can understand the information it gives you.
