The mayor, Mohammed Mleihan, said parents were so frightened they did not send their children to school that day.

He immediately notified the security authorities, who he said combed the area looking for the aliens. They did not find any.

Moussa Barhoumeh, Al Ghad's managing editor, said the newspaper was simply having some good natured fun on April Fools' Day, and had apologised for any inconvenience caused.

While Egyptians are renowned as the big jokers in the Arab world, able to easily laugh at just about anything, the Jordanians are considered more serious.
yes, the americans thought a radio dramatisation of war of the worlds was real (despite warnings being broadcast before and after each segment stating that it was a story)

It is now banned from being broadcast on american radio.

you can read it, its a novel by H.G Wells. I doubt theres a recording of it because it was pretty long and happened decades ago.

The article doesn't say that it was never reported that Americans thought that an alien invasion was taking place, it claims that the extent to which Americans found it believable was greatly exaggerated and stories were fabricated and passed on as true by vendors to sell more papers.

I did get the joke. District 9 took place in South Africa, not Jordan. The second part had a bit of sarcasm.

Well... at least people have faith in their papers over there. For better or for worse.

And at least when their papers post lies it's all in the name of humor and not misleading the public to cover something up or to just create false emotions of fear and/or hate.
    (or maybe they do too...)
