All right. I’m new here and I’m just gonna go for it: World in Conflict is an RTS (Real-Time Strategy) game that has is on the PC Platform. It was made by the Massive Entertainment Company, and then published by Sierra, a leading video game company. It was made in September 2007, but it’s still an amazing game. But this isn’t your average RTS. Let’s take a closer look! World in Conflict is set in the United States of America in the year 1989, when the Soviet Union was collapsing (economically, socially, etc.) This game is a portrayal of the Soviets trying to remain in power in this time of crysis. The Gameplay: World in Conflict is MUCH different than many other RTS games (Real-Time Strategy). There is no “base-building or resource getting†whatsoever inside the game. Instead, there’s a twist! You are given an amount of units in the starting of a mission, then given reinforcements through a tactical menu! You get so many points based on your skill level, and how many enemies you kill. In this method, you can summon reinforcements, tactically, into the fray of battle and claim a victory! The different nations or factions: Theres 3 “factions†in World in Conflict. The United States of America, the Soviets, and NATO ( The alliance between France, Germany, Britain, The UK, Canada and the US). You can play the US and NATO in the single-player campaign. The US and NATO, in the campaign, are allies to take out the Soviets! Each different nation or faction has it's own units also, which only correspond to that nation. As well as being enemies in the campaign, the US and NATO still are enemies to the Soviet Union. Battle Units: There’s quite a few units in World in Conflict making it a diverse game. There’s three types of units in World in Conflict, which are Infantry, Air, and Armour. Infantry include Rifleman, Tank Troopers , Engineer’s and Demolition officers. Air includes Helicopters and planes. Armour includes many various things, including Infantry Transports, Tanks, Artillary, Humvee’s, and Anti-Air tanks. One of the cool things about this game is unit skills. Each unit in the game has a special skill on a cooldown which helps it in battle. Each unit has an offensive, and defensive ability. The offensive ability helps the unit do more damage to other units. For example, the Artillery unit has a special skill called “Phosphorus Shellâ€ÂÂ, which does more damage to infantry. The defensive skills are for... you guessed it, defense! An example of this is the defensive ability of the Troop Transport, which allows it too make a smokescreen, making your units invisible to the enemy fire. Air Support: As well as having Air units, such as helicopters and Planes... you also get another support! You get Tactical Aids! Like in Command and Conquer Generals, you will have aids that help you in, and out of combat. These can change the tide of battle for you, in campaign, or in skirmish! The system allows to have some defense, and a backup plan just in case your units don’t perform at the suspected level you intended them too! Some of these Aid’s include Airstrikes, Artillery Barrages, Carpet bombing, and even napalm strikes! Multiplayer and Online: The multiplayer and online game support of World in Conflict is great. The online games support up to sixteen players! As well as playing online, you can also play on LAN with your friends. Because World in Conflict is different because there’s no need for building units and gathering resources, the online modes have a twist! There’s 3 different map types, or game modes. They are the following: Domination maps/mode, where a team needs to defend a series of command points or bases to win the game, assault mode, where one team defends a series of command points or bases against the other team, and tug of war mode, where teams must fight to capture a series of command points to win. As well as having all of that great multiplayer actions, the game host online can even add bots to play in the game! The AI is quite good, and uses new techniques and strategies based on the game mode and skill level of other players. They adapt quickly, and react well to changing situations. Now, the review! Presentation: 7/10 The overall presentation is pretty neat, bringing a new and fresh idea into the Real-Time Strategie genre. Graphics 8/10 The graphics are stellar for a Real-Time Strategy game. I’m pretty picky about my graphics, and I had no problem adapting to this! The Gameplay: 9/10 The gameplay is pretty awesome, bringing in a new twist to Real Time Strategies. This game makes you ponder each choice, and makes you think if you’re doing the best thing for your forces. It creates a new mood as well, changing the way you think about an RTS (Real Time Strategies). It spices it up a little! The Sound: 7/10 The sound for World in Conflict is pretty decent for a Real-time Strategy. You hear explosions, gunshots and all of the other normal war sounds as your forces attack. The voices of the characters, are quite annoying though. Lasting Appeal: I give this a 8/10. It's a great game, that makes you think about Real-Time Strategies and fun! The Final Verdict: 39/50 The final verdict for this game is an 39 out of 50. This game redefines the way we think about Real-Time Strategies and how they’re played. It’s a very interactive game, which makes you rethink and ponder different choices you make in the game. All in all, it’s a great game, even if it is a little out-dated! Anyways, I’m done here. Criticism is.. eagerly welcomed. Thanks for reading this!
