Screenshots and videos at the end.

Many people are of the opinion that back in the day’s game developers really knew how to innovate and create wonderful games. Well, I happen to agree, and what I bring you today is nothing short of a wonderful game in all aspects of the word.

Urban Terror has it's origins in Quake 3, initially the game started out as a total conversion mod designed to fuse the fast action-paced gaming of Quake 3 with the realism of real life, effects such as recoil, stamina and reloading has been introduced while elements such as moment has been kept to Hollywood-realism. For many years it continued and grew within the mod community and became the premiere mod for Quake 3, in recent times though, the team behind Urban Terror decided to take advantage of Quake 3 having gone open source and made a stand-alone version of the game which is still freely available.

    Presentation - 0/10
Okay, the game has no story line, there’re no terrorist plots, no murderous zombies or noble SWAT grunt. This game is pure human-based action; there are neither scripted events nor in-game cinematics. The game does include a crude AI but it's tedious to active since this is in essence an online game and was never intended to be played alone.

    Graphics - 4/10
I mentioned the game is based on Quake 3 code, this also means that the graphics are sub par compared to today’s standards, if you absolutely must have rag doll physics with dynamic lightning and a million pixels per snowflake then this game isn't for you. With that said though, it's by no means bad graphics, they don't affect the gameplay in any negative way nor do they feel ugly or disruptive.

    Gameplay - 10/10
This is where the game truly shines, this game is the epitome of gameplay, and it’s what all future games ought to be modelled after. Once you get in a game you will most likely feel a little overwhelmed with the pace of the game, I can guarantee that you will die at least 5 times within the first 2 minutes unless you hide inside your spawn area. As you get used to the game you learn to love this, because it's what Urban Terror is about, as soon as you've gotten used to the pace you start enjoying the insensitivity of the game and it's this that makes this game worth playing; feeling the adrenaline pumping in your body after an intense 20 minutes of jumps, slides and skill-shots.

The learning curve of this game is immense to say the least, it's not especially steep per se but you find that there's always something new to learn or to improve on. The movement system is unique to say the least and you will quickly become best friends with the sprint key, speed is of the essence in this game and the ability to get behind the enemy before they've even left their spawn can make or break the war.

The game achieves this speed by providing several moves that are more Quake 3 than realism. First of all we have wall-jumping, the ability to jump off walls and thereby gain altitude and speed in your movement, with this skill you can fully utilize all areas of the maps and navigate them quickly and skilfully to gain an advantage over your enemy. Second of all there's the power slide move, it's extremely simple; you pick up speed and hold crouch before landing a jump, you will then proceed to slide along the ground and make an incredibly hard to hit target.

    Sound - 8/10
Sounds are great in the game, they aim for the realism effect, besides the usual sound effects and ambient noise you also have access to an in-game radio menu with choices such as "Who's your daddy!" which adds some humour to the game, nothing beats pulling off a difficult jump and ending it with a skill-shot before sending a laugh to your team-mates.

    Replayability - 10/10
The game scores top-grade here on sole reason that no two games are alike, this might be because there's no actual single player game but that's actually irrelevant, you'll find yourself facing different opponents with different tactics all the time, there's no smarter intelligence than that of real human enemies.

    Conclusion - 8/10
Okay I know I'm not summing the grades but I hardly feel that's fair since one and a half of the sections don't really apply to the game. I've given this game this relatively high score based on how much fun you end up having despite a few lackings the game does have, I sometimes find myself shaking after an intense clan-war where the score was close right up until the end, that's how much adrenaline this game will make you generate!

The game is freely available for download at: http://www.urbanterror.net

Bomb mode round ending, you don't want to be anywhere near when this baby goes boom.

The AK is one of the heavier weapons in the game, the heavy punch comes at the expense of accuracy and spread though.

Sniping is an important part of the game, if your aim is true you can pick off enemies from afar. But be careful, they might just show up behind you.

Here are some videos that show off the movements and gameplay.

This first one is about movement, jumps especially, it shows off a map made especially to practice jumping; and despite how easy the author makes it look like it actually takes quite a bit of practice to accomplish.

Here's one made by a clan I played against lately, it was an official Capture The Flag war for the ioUrT.com league. We won of course. :)
