This is my review on the musical game Audiosurf. Man, my third review this month, I'm on a roll!

Well, I *ahem downloaded Audiosurf with some news of *ahem rlslog, after having been through the thread created in PC Gaming Lounge. Read on.

Once I found a good seeding torrent and downloaded it, I played it. The game was quite good, I thought it was amazing how the game generated levels and playing obstacles from the beats and sounds from your music file which you import, it basically is a music game which allows you to play a Guitar Hero type game, where you are a space ship thing and you are on a music track with obstacles which you must hit with your ship, and dodge "harmful to your score" obstacles, and you play it your favourite song and listen to it while playing, so you're actually playing the game with the music, not playing the game, then choosing to play music. This provides a very enjoyable and fun gaming experience, and at a cheap punter for $10, this is a well worth buy (download in my case).

The graphics are okay, reminds you of early 2000s games graphics, but it doesn't really matter, it's the gameplay that counts. They did incorporate different options for different qualities of the levels, such as the blocks and players and whatnot. I always chose the lowest version, it was really fast and smooth with no delay and choppiness, I also did it because of the highest quality, it actually lags partly on really busy songs, such as Through the Fire and Flames, etc. I custom built my computer myself, guess I did a bad job. The menu graphics are nice though, electronic and futuristic looks, buttons and graphics. You can play on either a white or black environment, why not rainbow..

The sound is well, the song that you're listening and playing to. So, not much description for sound. Sound effects though are futuristic and techno sounding, like when you go through the menu and access options, also when you hit into blocks with your player or ship in levels, you hear a little partial click or tap.

Gameplay is good, there's three rows that you move your character or ship in and out of, trying to get the blocks to score points and dodging grey blocks, which are harmful to your combos. There are Yellow, Blue, Green and Red etc. blocks, the differently coloured or rarer blocks are worth more points, but they usually appear when you're in exciting parts of the song or level, like a solo or something. Doing combos is easy, collect good blocks in each three rows (you get about 4 or 5 spaces in each row) and if you fill all of them with Red or Yellow blocks, they will disappear and reward you with a lot of points. Different players however, make the level harder, such as more blocks in the level, as well as sped enhanced and more dangers, and some allow you to do more stuff, like jump over blocks. Some even have a overfill feature too, if you fill a row with more blocks it can handle, you sort of shut down, and then you can't retrieve any more blocks until you get back up and still running again. Also, the more higher level your player is, the more points you will score, but it will not count as a beginner etc. score, instead, it will count as in the category it is in, this is referring to online scores.

You control with either your mouse or your keyboard, at first I thought you could only move using your keyboard, which made everything harder, as you have to press really fast to get from one side to another, then I used the mouse, which was a lot more easy to control and manoevrable. You'll need a decent mouse though, not a shit one, or else you may find controlling with your mouse is more frustrating that using the keyboard.

It's pretty cool, once you've finished your song, you're asked if you want to submit in the online scores list of that particular song. To do this, you have to log in to your User (you can easily create one) and it requires an working internet connection. If for some reason your game is labelled as nothing or something weird, not the name of the song, it's probably because it hasn't been tagged, so you have to do it yourself if you want to submit your high score online. It's Steam Powered.

So, all in all, it's a very enjoyable game, extremely fun which should last for ages to come, and it's a cheap steal at only $10 or so.

    Now, onto the marks.

Presentation: 9/10 - Everything is presented in a clear way, easily navigation of menus, and there's not many features in it anyway, so you wouldn't get stuck on anything

Graphics: 6/10 - Graphics were kind of lacking, sort of reminds me of early 2000s game's graphics, the menu is alright though. Would have been good if they could include an option for higher graphics for the game for faster computers

    Sound: 9/10
    - Pretty much explanatory

Gameplay: 8/10 - Gameplay is fun and enjoyable, very easy to get used to and to play, a few little flaws in movement here and there

Lasting Appeal: 9/10 - This game is extremely fun to play over and over again, never gets boring unless you play it on days on end, or you run out of good songs that are new, or you have gay songs or you have no songs

Total: 41/50 - All in all, this is a really wicked game for a cheap price, fun! This is a game recommended by Anandjones, only over 39 counts folks!

If you guys want to know, my username is anandjones for Audiosurf, you can also find it in the Steam thread in Romline Gamers as well as my Lost Planet Extreme Condition user. If you see any of my scores, try to beat it! A little while ago, Void and I competed to get the highest score on Down With The Sickness by Disturbed, unfortunately he won :( Darn.. That's all for now.

booooo my steam account gives me module error and I can't fix it.

I've never heard of this game, I saw the pics and thought it was a new guitar hero clone, but it's not.

i probably can't even play because my computer sucks.

Well, the system requirements are Intel Pentium 4 1.6 GHz processor, 512 MB RAM, DirectX 9.0 or higher, Windows XP/Vista, DirectX 9.0c-compatible sound card, 32 MB DirectX 9.0 compatible Graphics card. (support for Pixel Shader 3.0 recommended). I'm not too sure if it's minimum or recommended, check that out for yourself.

I have this game, although I didn't pay for it. I think its an awesome concept, and well worth $10. I just refuse to have steam malware on my computer.

Sorry for the late response but I'm new to the area,

I enjoyed this game too, I mainly only played the mono mode as I felt the others weren't as appealing.
My only problem is that the game doesn't have a playlist mode where you can just add a playlist and let it loop through.
The highscores are a really good idea and you even get an email through if someone beats your highscore on a song.

[EDIT] Although steam is a process killer, Valve have done an excellent job with it over the years offering downloadable content, achievements, storing server information as favourites, back in the day it was a pain to find updates and having to download them from other sources to get onto a game. Also Valve do not sell in territories meaning that as long as my pound stays stronger then the dollar I can enjoy these games at half price where as in the shops I would have to pay almost double the dollar.

Yeah a Playlist option would be good. Also, having the blocks keep in proper exact tune with the music would be better too. Seems to me like Audiosurf was made using an engine similar to DarkBasic or DarkBasic Pro. Hmm..
