I'm just wondering what an optic fibre connection really does. So simply, what is it and what does it do to speed up the internet?
And if anyone can tell me what to do to get one.

    Thanks in advance.

its a type of cable that uses thin strands of glass instead of copper, and instead of electricity being sent down it, it's rapid pulses of laser light. It can carry much more data than copper.

Unless there is a fiber optic internet provider in your area, you would have to have one installed, which is hugely expensive, and costs about 4 digits per month to run.

In Australia, the National Broadband Network is rolling out "fibre to the home"services. Quote:" In NBN fibre areas, it will deliver super-fast internet with wholesale speeds of up to 100 Mbps download and 40 Mbps upload and can also deliver high speeds no matter how far you live from the exchange*( * We're designing the NBN to provide these speeds to our wholesale customers, telephone and internet service providers. Your experience including the speeds actually achieved over the NBN depends on some factors outside our control like your equipment quality, software, broadband plans and how your service provider designs its network.) . The NBN is planned to be upgraded in the future to deliver increased wholesale speeds of up to 1,000 Mbps download and 400 Mbps upload". It depends on where you live as to when it will be available to you. See here for rollout details. See here for connection info. Do your research too as I have heard reports of some ISPs dressing up adsl2+ as NBN services. Hope this helps.

    ^Thanks.
But I checked a while ago, where I live, the NBN is not planned. Basically, we don't get it.
