uhm,...whats the opposite of love? i read a more "fancier" word for it than using "hate". Its supposed to reflect on a philosophical perspective.
Re: a dumb question Abhor, to hate is to still have some emotional attachment for someone or something. To abhor means that someone or something no longer exists for you or is worthless.
Re: a dumb question Abhor is good. I like the word abhor. I like the word loathe better. There's also, abominate, despise, detest, execrate, loathe. Take your pick. ;D
Re: a dumb question Is the word you're looking for "Apathy"? Apathy meaning 1. Lack of interest or concern, especially regarding matters of general importance or appeal; indifference. 2. Lack of emotion or feeling; impassiveness.
Re: a dumb question Thanks to your post above, I just remembered that indifference is yet another synonym for the antonym of love apophos755.
Re: a dumb question Indifference cannot be a synonym of love. It means an absence of emotions. Love is an emotion full of positive connotations, so it's opposite must be full of negative inferences.
Re: a dumb question You mis-read my post grim, I said "the synonym for the antonym of love" or indifference means the same as the opposite of love ;D
Re: a dumb question Oh...haha sorry Cahos I got confused. But if you are saying it is an antonym, it can't be that either. Again, indifference denotes no emotion, so the opposite of love must be an emotion. Sorry if I am again misreading...a little slow today
Re: a dumb question How should I put this.... Ah OK. To love, you "feel" for someone or something, "feeling" something means you have an emotional connection with that someone or something. When you abhor or are indifferent towards someone or something, you have "no" feelings whatsoever towards that you abhor or are indifferent to. Or like this: Love = emotional attachment Hate = emotional attachment but with a hurtful or sad tone Abhor or indifference = no emotional attachment whatever I hope this didn't confuse you more.
Re: a dumb question Yes but that is what I am trying to say. Love = emotional attachment. Therefore the opposite of it must also be an emotional attatchment. Hate or detest are the perfect opposites for love. Abhor means to find repugnant or offensive to the mind, so technically cannot be that. Indifference means no emotion whatsoever.
Re: a dumb question Sorry for the late reply I was too busy checking up on all the posts on Games & Jokes. Anyway, when you love someone or something, don't you have emotional attachments to it/them? Now, when you no longer have love for someone/something don't you have no more feelings for it/them? And in some cases don't you sometimes get repulsed by the sight of it/them? That is my answer. Love isn't entirely an emotion, it's more of a jumble of emotions or concepts, that's why the opposite of love is having no emotions towards something.
Re: a dumb question Well I understand where you are coming from, and you also have a valid point. But the key, in my opinion, is that love is an emotion even if it is more of a jumble of emotions. Your argument appears to be that the opposite of having emotions is not having them, and I understand that. But focussing particularly on the word love, it is a positive and happy jumble of emotions is it not? Thus, what I'm saying is that the opposite of that would be a negative and sad jumble of emotions, hence hate. So its kind of like this: Emotion <-----------> No emotion Love <------------> Hate These are each other's opposites. Here are you not suggesting that repulsion and loathing is the opposite of love, as these two things are emotions? I think the reason we are not in agreement is because your point of view is objective on love and emotions whilst mine is more subjective in relation to the word itself. heh heh
Re: a dumb question I know this is a silly topic but would it be a good idea if this was moved to Debates Section? I actually got your point grim, yeah if you focus on love as an emotion, hate is it's negative emotion opposite. But if you focus on the abstract concept, then indifference & to abhor is what's appropriate. To be honest, I used to think that hate was the only absolute opposite of love, that is until someone explained it using the Abstract concept approach.
Re: a dumb question Well Cahos, in essence we are both right and I don't think either of our arguments are wrong. I wonder what original poster is thinking...hahaha bet this was more than he bargained for.
Hate is very much an motion, it's sort of the polar opposite of Love really. If you want something with emotion - no emotion then you're looking at indifference or apathy.
Short answer: hate. Long answer: depends on YOUR meaning of love and the context. For example, if it was food "I love fried potatoes.", the most sensible would be "I detest fried potatoes". Philosophically, then abhor, apathy, indifference, et. al.
wow...i never thought that a simple inquiry of antonym's would result to so much discussion. anyway i agree with no-emotion being the opposite of emotion, but its kind of dubitable to have hate as the opposite of emotion as no-emotion because is it not that hate is a form of emotion featured by resentment?
With as many people as are active here, you can get a lot of different opinions. I personally like to see what others think about a subject, that's why I come to the forums a lot. Discussion is a good thing, as long as no one tries to force their opinion upon someone else. You're welcome. I try to look at things from a broader perspective.
