here is the story... in a latent form

... Once upon a time there was a computer, faster than the speed of smell. It had just enough power to run splintercell CT with minimal farting... then it struck, something popped and never woke up again. We thought is was the video card at first, swapping it out and trying to revive the old coot. no dice, we found that it was the motherboard, some of the capacitors blew (normally they have a flat top like a soda can, but now the tops were raised like buttons) and that was the reason I am typing to you today...

    Question : Dear Gigabyte,
My Gigabyte GA-K8NS Pro motherboard is no longer working and I need a replacement. It has several capacitors that are starting to blow their tops and I no longer display anything on my monitor. I have checked my monitor and video card with another computer so I know they both work.
I would like to get a replacement mother board that has at least 4 PCI slots, an AGP or PCI express video card slot, 2 to 4 DDR memory slots and supports a 2.5 GHz or higher CPU speed. It needs 2 IDE slots to support 2 DVD Drives (upgradable to BlueRay) and two 80GB HD, one FDD slot for a 3.5" drive, and and internal F_USB plug. Hopefully the back I/O panel has the approximate configuration. Is there something that matches what I am looking for? Thanks.

Bluray drives are SATA only. You will not get a motherboard with two IDE channels anymore, so you will need to switch to SATA. 4 PCI slots is also unlikely as everything is PCI-Express now.

well, what are some good mother board models that are reasonably priced with 4 PCI channels and an AGP or PCI-e video channel, (we got 2 video cards, pci-express and an AGP so that thing's off our list)

Are there any IDE to SATA adapters for the hard drives and the DVD drives? ??? (it would be great if it was in cable form, the chip type is vary sketchy)

this is the one that we have, can you give us something along these lines? (this is the one that pooped)

There arent any. They arent made anymore. You can either get a secondhand motherboard (I strongly reccommend against this) or you can upgrade. Technology has moved on.

Yes but using them is pointless, as SATA is far superior to IDE and you lose all the benefit. IDE may well not be fast enough for a bluray drive.

    a couple of questions

    is SATA a 1:1 (connector:drive) ratio?
how do you get information from a IDE hard drive to a SATA hard drive?

    1. I don't understand the first question.
    2. You drag and drop files between them. It's not rocket science.

    nevermind I got my answer...

    but would the hardware work?

yes, not as well as it could, but it will work. Check what the IDE card supports, a lot of them will only run hard disks, and not optical drives. (like IDE3 and 4 on your previous gigabyte board).

SATA is one drive per channel (unless you use a port multiplier, which allows up to 5 drives on one channel, but we wont go there). and there are three versions of SATA. SATAI (also known as SATA1.5g or SATA 1.5gbit/s), SATAII (also known as SATA3g or SATA 3gbit/s) and SATAIII (also known as SATA6g or (official name) SATA 6gbit/s). The only difference is the maximum transfer rates, which are 1.5Gbit/s, 3Gbit/s and 6Gbit/s respectively. SATAII is the most common these days, SATAIII has little benefit with normal harddisks (though they do exist), and is mainly intended for SSDs.

You will need a new processor with that board, and I strongly reccomend you check your power supply to make sure it is up to the new components, as it will more than likely also need upgrading.

also, just for your information, the best price per GB on hard disks is currently on the 1TB drives.

I can't thank you enough... now I'm a step closer to getting my laptop back :)

oh, the ide channel will only be used for dumping the IDE hard disc information into the SATA drives...

what would be a good layout if you were to rebuild your computer on a budget standard?

    would this suffice?

Its the correct socket, but you need to check the motherboard will accept that speed and power (the 95W) and you also need a suitable cooler (intel stock coolers suck). www.Frostytech.com is a good place for cooler reviews; make sure the cooler you're looking at is LGA 1156 compatible.

personally I'd go with whats reviewed as the best for what I want, but I'd tend towards zalman/akasa (UK only)/thermalltake/scyth/mugen/coolermaster/vantec
