I wasn't trying to be offensive, it's just mildly annoying to me to have my country associated with another country that has made it very clear that it doesn't want to have anything to do with us. Northern Ireland implies that the country is part of Ireland, it would be as ridiculous as calling Canada "Northern USA", or Denmark "Northern Germany".
