Ok, this might sound absurd but I'm just wondering. Also, apologies if this isn't posted in the proper section.

Using the same equipment as is used to extract rom dumps from say, a NES cartridge, would it be possible to apply a patch on a hardcopy of a game.

For instance, say I had ff3, now it's in japanese, so say I wanted to apply a language patch within the game itself so it could be played on a real console, would that be possible.

Also this brings another question to my mind, since the nes allowed unlisenced games to run on it, does any kind of dummy cartridges exist and if so can these be purchased. It would be very useful to run patched or hacked games on a real console, especially the NES 2 top loader, since it can play any NES game.

    Thx

If you are wanting to do it on a proper cartridge then no. Read Only Memory.

copier/loaders can usually run roms either from a floppy disk/CD or a parallel cable to your computer.

Well actually you can, if you have access to the kind of equipment the old bootleg companies from Asia had at that time which is a mass production line that transferred ROM data into cartridge circuitry. An example of these blokes is that Comy company who made those FamiCom Street Fighter games from the late 90's.

And this isn't a silly topic to ask about or discuss as this has also been talked about on forums that are stricly concerned with ROM Hacking & Emulation in general :)

Only some games you can put a patch on to turn it into english. you need to download some crap first and then the patch. One example of this is 'Jump Ultimate Stars'. They have a patch that can make most of it english.

@lubuisking: You're talking about a ROM image being patched, the guy is asking about patching an actual game cartridge, LOL
