Do you belive there is such a thing as being nonconformist?? I belive you can be diffrent from a lage percentage, for example i have long curly hair, wear 80s biker boots, faded jeans and listen to 80s metal. i may diffrent from most people my age but im not nonconformist, i just conform to something diffrent.

Well going by what calvin said:

    Religion: I'm Athiest. Nuff said.

Fashion: I just pick up clothes and wear them, which tend to be black normal fit jeans (Because style does not bother me) with a sort of rock salt grey/white down the front. I usually wear a No Fear T-shirt. The only problem with all of this, is I wear what my mum buys me. She'll go out and buy me stuff and I'll wear it simple as. If I had my way, I'd be wearing a tropical shirt, combat shorts and sandels.

Then again she probably buys me black clothing because of the music I listen to. What she doesn't take into account is the fact that I listen to a broad range of music, not just rock/metal.

Its been a long time since i did this at college but from what i remember about it i think im as close as possible to nonconformity because i dont conform to any of the usual things.
I dont need to impress anyone or fit into their group to feel secure and have friends. i dont follow any fashion whatsoever, i have never had a hair "style" its always been just shaved because im lazy, nobody can influence me into doing something i dont want to, i wouldnt copy someone because they was cool and im not scared of anyone. I dont watch the tv shows everyone raves over, things like 24 and lost i have never seen, i just watch documentarys, tank overhaul is my favourite at the minute.
however i do conform to the rights and wrongs of society
it probably doesnt exist though because everybody conforms to something

after giving it some thought i believe nonconformity could exist but only outside of society

    That's pretty grim.

I'd like to think that I am a bastion of individuality, but I think we've now come to a point where everything has been recycled time and time again. The truth is that everybody here is a conformist... if you still think you aren't, get off the internet and go live in a cave.

    >_< I don't know what it is with that word... I just fail with spelling it, stupid English Language. Stupid me for always getting the spelling wrong (Before anybody gets to say this point >_<)

And yes Nex. It's pretty grim, I generally don't care what I wear as long as it is casual... If I can wear it, it keeps me warm (Which I don't actually need much clothing for) then I am absolutely fine. Although I refuse to wear anything to Hello Kitty, or anything Remotely pink.

This kind of goes back to the idea that there is no originality.

Every idea you or I may have is a product of external influence and internal interpretation.
So the idea of conformity falls into this category.

Can you do something that another group does not already do? Probably not.
If, however, you define 'nonconformist' as 'the act of abstaining from trends because they are popular' then people can be MOSTLY nonconformist, but not completely because they must practice certain cultural customs in order to function in society.

If you don't conform to the mindset of society somewhat you are going to be considered mentally ill. Dangers of conformity can be avoided by being aware of them within group settings and simply maintaining your individuality and opinions regardless of popular opinion. And that's all that really matters.

The goth, punk or whatever alternative subculture is popular with the kiddies these days are known to be "non-conformist". But by aligning themselves into a group whether they acknowledge it or not, that doesn't make them a non-conformist. In fact, it's conforming as much as they deny it.

It's all about identity, I guess. Being part of a group makes one think that they are not alone in their ideals, way of dress, lifestyle and music.

Personally, I don't care much for conformity or not. It's a bit overrated. This is why I choose to be a loner. I don't need to deal the bull of fitting in to an alternative culture or what have you. Not my style. :p

i once had an argument with a mosher(thats what we call them, dunno if others do) and he said we 'townies' all look the same and dress the same, have the same hairstyles etc so i pointed out that every single one of him and his mates all had baggy jeans with a chain hanging off them, a black hoodie with linkin park or whoever on it, long hair and a skateboard under their arm.

simple fact is everyone conforms, especially the people who try not to

Even if you do by some miracle become non-conformist, someone'll just come along and copy you and then you'll be conforming again.

I think that it's unlikely (to put it mildly) that it will happen, all of these ridiculous theories and date-settings are usually propagated by sensationalist sources/organisations who gain from other people taking an interest (newspapers and the like) and religious lunatics and people who are terrified of their own existence. As for this solar storm or whatever; I have no idea, if the possibility is backed by science who knows?
As an atheist though, I think that the Mayan calendar predicting the apocalypse is a load of rubbish. If you can believe that a magic calendar can predict the future, you would be too busy making tin foil hats so as to keep the government out of your brain to notice the world ending anyhow.See what I did there?

I' not really non-conformitist, I just don't conform to a majority of the people I know. I like hardcore music, emo style (I'm not really a practical emo, I just like the look) and watching old T.V shows.
