Hope someone here can help me out/enlighten me a little.

My son has replaced his NDS-Lite (which was in dire need of replacing) by a 3DS. Originally we were going for a DSi, but the store said in the coming years game developpers would be paying far more attention to the 3DS then to the older models and quite frankly, we, or rather I, bought that and seeing there was only a € 20,00 price difference I figured it was not that big a deal so we went with the 3DS. Honestly, it looks rather good and has some nice gimmicks so no problem there.

My problem however is that his old NDS had an R4 card (I'm assuming a clone and not an original) with a whole slew of games (sorry, he can catch them all, but I can't buy them all) on them and the 3DS won't reckognise it. I remember I had the Wood menu on it, but even after updating it to the latest version it won't work on the 3DS (the Lite it works perfectly on).

So basically what kind of card should I be getting and what kind of firmware should I be running on it?

I found this a R4i-RTS-Lite-4GB and presumeably Wood 1.30 will work on that?

I heard some (hoax?) stories that a 3DS can be bricked if you a flashcard, but I haven't heard it happen yet. I figure they might revoke some online crap, but I doubt somewhat that they can (legally) completly render it useless. I figure that as long as I'm not updating before Wood (or whichever firmware I use) has caught up I should be pretty safe right?

If I may indulge a bit as this could a little off topic:

I never got music and movies to play on the NDS-Lite (I can't seem to understand Moonshell at all), but if I could get some pointers on that I'd much appreciate it. Also I wonder if someone knows if there homebrew apps that adds other functionalities. My son particulary is looking for one that lets you play with pictures you make. I know there is a standard app on the 3DS, but that's rather limited and he is looking for one like on the DSi that lets you warp pictures.

    Any assistance very much appreciated.

    Woodr4 can't run on the 3DS
And yes flashcard causing brick on 3DS is hoax.

You need a card like Ez Flash Vi to run on the 3DS.

    1. If you play the flash cart and 3DS while in a construction area, you really might get bricked. Especially if a
worker accidentally drop one from above. *Seriously it won't, its mere hoax to fool kids.
Rule of thump is to never accept the Nintendo's firmware update via WIFI before you update
your flash cart to make it able to overwrite it. If you can't find an update for your cart, don't
accept the Nintendo firmware update. If you're not sure that its safe to accept, don't.
Even better...don't go online with it. That should save you from any problem.

    2. For music player, you can play it via Moonshell. Simply place a compatible music format in a folder,
locate it via Moonshell menu, and run it. Or you can download a homebrew known as LMP-NG.nds
Follow the installation instruction, make a folder to keep the .mp3 files, run the .nds program, done.
Here are the links: http://www.ds-xtra.com/LMP-ng or http://www.cecm.usp.br/~lucas/lmp-ng/.
Here is the direct download link : http://www.cecm.usp.br/~lucas/lmp-ng/lmp-ng-2-alpha.zip
Thanks to : Lick and Lucas

    3. For movies : you need to convert it to .dpg and play it on Moonshell. Use a .dpg convertor program.
Lots of freeware program for that purpose. Or download ready made dpg files:

    4. Your kid can try 'drawn to life' an nds game. But apps like the one on 3DS, I don't know.
As for the games that was on his old R4, simply copy them over to the new flash cart you had bought
for the 3DS. The old cart if not mentioned as compatible for use on 3DS will not work. If you have not
bought one, then maybe get the Acekard2i or any that is compatible.

Three flashcards i recommend: Acekard 2i, supercard DSTwo and r4i gold 3ds, you can find them here: http://www.digitopz.com/nintendo-3ds-flashcard-c-29.html Do not buy other cards or other clone like R4i-RTS you metioned. All those three cards can let you play DS games, watch video and listen the music. But one thing you should notice, if you still have the DSL, that's great, choose any of them, because you need to update the AK2i and DSTwo with DSL to support 3DS V2.1.0-4 if your 3DS is in this firmware. If you dont have the DSL or DSi, then just choose a R4i gold 3ds, a budget good card, running wood firmware V1.36 now!

I wouldn't recommend the Vi for the 3DS. I would get the Acekard 2i or the SuperCard DSTwo.

That is only because it is slow to update.
