I'm planning on buying a new laptop this summer. I'm not good with the chose of specs and what not, so I thought I should ask.

I want to make sure that whatever i get will run the Dolphin (GC/Wii) emulator, Because I'm pretty sure it's the hardest program I'll be running on it. I'll be using it for school(Microsoft Word, etc...), and for music (Notation Software, Guitar Pro, Windows Media Player). I'm gonna have to go with Windows because it's not gay... and I only need a 160gb hdd

I should have somewhere from $300-$500 by the summer.

Any and all suggestions are welcome. :D

dont get a laptop if you want to run dolphin, even the best laptop money can buy would struggle. Also don't expect a laptop that can play any post 2005 games at all for that price range.

£243.04, but don't forget that prices are inflated over here.

On the subject of that laptop, I think its doubtful that it will run pj64 as it has an intel graphics chip, and they are notoriously shit. They have no 3d support whatsoever.

So what should I be looking for then?

    EDIT:

    I found this guy:

    CQ61Z (Customizable)
    http://www.shopping.hp.com/webapp/shopping/computer_can_series.do?storeName=computer_store&category=notebooks&a1=Category&v1=Everyday+computing&series_name=CQ61Z_series&jumpid=in_R329_prodexp/hhoslp/psg/notebooks/Everyday_computing/CQ61Z_series

The only graphics card I can get with it is ATI Radeon(128mb), Would that work? Or would I be able to buy a good graphics card somwhere else and have a friend install it? (I have friends that are good with that stuff)

dedicated graphics chip, preferably nvidia (not even ATI fans can deny that ATI mobility chips suck) with 256MB video ram. Other specs are OK on the one you found. Dells tend to be overpriced, and avoid acer, gateway and alienware. (medion are a lottery so you're probably best off avoiding them as well)

The only way your going to get anything half decent is to get a 2nd hand one or a refurbished one.Even them "free" ones with a mobile/dongle deals are better than what your budget is.

Would getting a referbished one be a good idea?

And why can't I get this one ($454.99):

    CQ61Z (Customizable)
    http://www.shopping.hp.com/webapp/shopping/computer_can_series.do?storeName=computer_store&category=notebooks&a1=Category&v1=Everyday+computing&series_name=CQ61Z_series&jumpid=in_R329_prodexp/hhoslp/psg/notebooks/Everyday_computing/CQ61Z_series

    With:
    OS:Windows 7
    Processor:MD Athlon(TM) II Dual-Core Processor for Notebook PCs M300 (2.0GHz, 1MB L2 Cache)
    Memory:3GB DDR2 System Memory (2 Dimm)
    HDD:250GB 5400RPM SATA Hard Drive
Screen:15.6" diagonal High Definition HP Brightview Display (1366x768)

And buy a graphics card for it?

LOL,I bought the Acer for one purpose only-for my son to watch you-tube videos-nothing else.It cost £230 plus £30 for a Logitech mouse. That comes to what your budget is going to be.But the Acer will soon be used for hooking it up to my motor and when Im on holiday.
Your budget is in the "entry level" Laptop category,so the spec will reflect that unfortunately.

You cannot add graphics cards to laptops (not without a load of extra hardware and an external monitor, and it doesnt work that well). You can often choose one at point of ordering, but it cant be changed later. That laptop only offers a choice of of ATI cards, which have shit performance. (it's false advertising, you think you're getting a HD 4200 but in actuality you get a chip that performs equivalent to a HD 2100, i.e half as good) With Nvidia laptop chips the one you get has about 80% of the performance of its desktop version. 128MB is also on the low side.

Well, I guess I should just wait till I save up some more.

And just to make sure I have everything right, I'm looking for a laptop with-

    a processor thats 2.0GHz to 2.2GHz
    3Gb RAM
    160Gb hardrive
and a dedicated Nvidia laptop graphics chip.

If it meats those specs im good right? And how much do you thing I should save up before buying one?

I'd say no less than 2.0Ghz processor, preferably 2.2 or more (dual core preferable), and at least 2GB of ram. Other than that your post is fine.

Remember that Packard Bell laptop's aren't always a safe choise .

I should go for the Compaq , it has an decent Graphic card , a fine keyboard . Great speakers and a fast Dual Core processor . Also Remember that Compaq is a way better brand than Packard bell
