New here. What is firmwear?

I keep reading alot about firmwear updates. I am new to all of this.
Own a DS Lite with a M3 DS Real card.

In basic terms what is firmwear and when do you need to download it?

Also ,me friend gave me a system file to get the games working on the ds BUT it is in spanish. Is their another file I can download that will give me the icon/opening menu in english (not sure what it was called but it was a folder with about 200 files in it that was able to get the games to play)

Ok so I downloaded Sakura 1.45 and it is working BUT anyone know how to get it (if possible) to always start up at the game list? Sorry maybe a dumb question
