every final fantasy game has a different story. (apart from FFX-2 which is a sequel to FFX)

They are all fantastic stories. Due to you never playing any of them perhaps you should start with some of the newest ones. FF 12 on PS2 would be a good place to start. Although it isn't the best one, most people preferring FF7 and 8. Due to the low rate graphics (they were fantastic at the time they were released) it can turn people off. Give FF4 on the DS a go as well. Also, give FF Tactics Advance a go as well. It contains the same sort of story and characters but plays in a more strategic way.

Start with VI, VII, VIII, X, IV, preferably.

    train mission.
(theres lots more to come in the game but i wont spoyle it)
to be honest the game just got better & better with each part that i passed

    Backing up FFIX.

    Fun
    Simple
Great plot (your mileage may vary)
some of the best PSone graphics (others would say Chrono Cross)
Each character's class was already in place, but good ability learning system (similiar to FFVI's spell learning, but you can learn up to 3 abilities/techs per equipment at most and can take the equipment off once mastered)
    Kuja
Some say it's easy, but don't let it bother you

Generally, go with whichever game's that interest you. You might go in order of numbers or whatever. Some games are harder then others.

FFVIII is said to be one of the harder ones. Stay away from XI, and don't play XII until you've played some of the others. Also, as I implied before, play X before X-2

is there anyone who liked XI? :D

XI is an online mmo, it does not qualify.

I never heard of XI before. What is it like to play in the game?
BTW, FFVII is the first and best FF ever played. I recommend this to everyone to play this first xD

    Why?
    - Cloud is cool
    - His story is cool
    - His enemy (AKA Sephiroth) is ultra cool
    - Materia system rocks
    - Nice and hard sidequests
    - An unforgetful gaming experience :p
    - And nice FMVs

Meh, FFV was & still is my personal Favorite because I just love the Job class mastery system. Plus towards the end you, the player who is a guy will be fighting alongside three ladies, who wouldn't love that ;D

FF6 is a close second because of my favorite whacko villain, Kefka who is a major bad ass.

FF7 meh & meh, The pre Apocalyptic atmosphere didn't go well with my tastes & the whole "the world is alive & we're killin' it" message is so hippy-ish :p Tifa was the only saving grace in that game for me, Miss Aerith is just meh.

FF8, loved the idea of being in a School whose final exam can get you killed ;D

FF9 great because of it's return to the "Fantasy magick" era.

    FFX & X-2 a big meh.

I could recommend FFIV, but it might be too hard for a FF newbie. So I say FFVI.

I seem to remember a funny part on a FMV sequence where your falling out of the school in an epic scene ;D

FFVII and then FFVIII, probably to two most commonly played FF games. FFIV kind of lost the plot, and any FF after that was just horrid IMO.

personally i would start with 2 for snes. Its a great game, been remade on the gameboy advance and ps1 i believe. But all in all, most of the talk you hear about FF is from 7 and up. Playstation brought a whole new world out for 7 and up. Previously it was classic, but bad graphics which you cant blame for their time. Do not start with 10. In my opinion it will 'spoil' you and you wont be able to find enjoyment outta the earlier games. Not talking down on 10, but if you have the whole story read out to you, then its kinda hard to want to play an earlier version where reading is a big focus. In either event, Cheers, and good choice.

Friendly piece of dork info...Why was the game called Final Fantasy for NES?

A: It was to be Squares last game due to failure of other games they had produced. Because of the huge success of FF1 Square was able to continue making games, thus the reason the Franchise was born.

(Yes I realize that is useless info, but its a fun fact!)

FF2 for the SNES was actually the fourth installment in the franchise & FF3 again for the SNES was the sixth, Nintendo of America were Spazzes back then :p

I'd say start with VII, or start off (if you have a PSP), go with Crisis Core (the prequel to VII). Then go to VII, then make your own way to wherever. The only ones I've played, in my order are

    -Final Fantasy X
    - Final Fantasy VII
-Final Fantasy 8 (well, the one with Squall, I forget)
    - Final Fantasy X2
    -Final Fantasy III
    -Final Fantasy IV
    -Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII
